Using your own words, write a few paragraphs that (a) define each of these terms: priesthood keys, priesthood authority, priesthood power, priesthood ordinances, and priesthood offices; and (b) explains the differences between them.
There are many terms in church that can cause confusion if their definitions are not understood. It is especially important when we are talking about the priesthood. First, it is important to understand what priesthood keys are. Priesthood keys are the authority God has given to priesthood leaders to direct and
govern the use of His priesthood on earth. Whoever has priesthood keys governs who is given priesthood authority and how that priesthood is used. Priesthood authority is authority given by God to man to act in His name.
When a man receives the priesthood, he is given priesthood authority to act under the one that possesses the priesthood keys. Having priesthood authority does not mean they have priesthood keys. When a man is given priesthood authority they are entrusted priesthood power, which they can use to bless the lives of God's children here on earth. Only one who possesses priesthood authority can exercise priesthood power, however all of God's children have access to priesthood power in their lives. Priesthood power is God's power attained through righteousness. If a priesthood holder is not worthy they cannot exercise priesthood power. Priesthood power is used to
bless God's children, specifically through priesthood ordinances. Priesthood ordinances are sacred physical acts with symbolic meaning that requires priesthood authority to perform. Finally, priesthood authority is divided up into priesthood offices. Priesthood offices are divisions of priesthood authority to perform ordinances and administer to the church. Priesthood offices are a way to separate the responsibilities of the priesthood.
Based on your assigned readings above, write a paragraph in which you (A) list which keys belong to the Melchizedek Priesthood and briefly explain what they do, and (B) list which keys belong to the Aaronic Priesthood and briefly explain what they do.
The keys that belong to the Melchizedek Priesthood are the keys to administer the gospel, the keys to the mysteries of the kingdom, the key to the knowledge of God, and the key to all the spiritual blessings of the Church. The power and authority of the higher, or Melchizedek Priesthood, is to hold the keys of all the spiritual blessings of the church—To have the privilege of receiving the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, to have the heavens opened unto them, to commune with the general assembly and church of the Firstborn, and to enjoy the communion and presence of God the Father, and Jesus the mediator of the new covenant. The Melchizedek priesthood holds the right of presiding over the church and has power and authority over all the offices in the church in all ages of the world, to administer in spiritual things. Melchizedek priesthood has the right to officiate in all the offices in the church. The keys that belong to the Aaronic Priesthood are the keys to the Ministering of Angels, the keys to the Gospel of Repentance, and the keys to Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins. Those who hold the Aaronic priesthood are given the responsibility of baptizing and conferring the Holy Ghost, ordaining other elders, priests, teachers, and deacons; administering the sacrament, teaching and watching over the church, and visit church members.
Based on your assigned readings above, (A) list the individual offices of the Melchizedek Priesthood and the offices of the Aaronic Priesthood, and (B) explain what each office does that is unique from the other offices. (For example: “Elder: An elder can confirm someone a member of the Church, confer the gift of the Holy Ghost, and give blessings of healing and comfort.”)
The offices of the Melchizedek Priesthood are elder and High Priest. An elder can confirm someone a member of the Church, confer the gift of the Holy Ghost, and give blessings of healing and comfort. High
Priests have a right to officiate in their own standing, under the direction of the presidency, in administering spiritual things, and also in the office of an elder, priest, teacher, deacon, and member. Presidency has the right to officiate in all the offices in the church. The offices of the Aaronic Priesthood are priests, teachers, and deacons. The Bishopric is the presidency of this priesthood and holds the keys or authority of the same. The Priest’s duty is to preach, teach, expound, exhort, and baptize, and administer the sacrament. They are also responsible for visiting the house of each member and exhorting them to pray vocally and in secret and attend to all family duties. The teacher’s duty is to watch over the church always and be with and strengthen them; and see that there is no iniquity in the church, neither hardness with each other, neither lying, backbiting, nor evil speaking; and see that the church meet together often, and also see that all members do their duty. The duties of a deacon are similar to a teacher. They are entrusted with the passing of the sacrament and watching over the well-being of the members of the church.
