Student’s Last Name 1 BIB 105 KOFI SAM A 02/02/2022 Mission in the Modern World There are so many important points that can be drawn from the reading including the changing concept of missions, missionary, and missiology due to the encroachment of ideas from non-Western, non-Christian words teeming Christian societies. It is indeed agreeable that over the last couple of decades, the concept of mission and missionary has changed significantly that today, the context in which the terms ‘mission’ and ‘missionary’ are used can be as liberal as it can be: it could mean a volunteer doctor working in the outlying communities to help poor communities, or a music teacher that tries to revive love for Christian music in Muslim- dominated countries, or it could be a minister that traverse the African region to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have been left by civilization. Nonetheless, I am particularly struck by a quotation I have found in the reading that encourages us to look back at the traditional definitions of missionary, mission, and missiology: “The types of work that are called missionary service are almost unlimited today... traditionally, a missionary was a person who crossed cultural boundaries to establish new outreach on behalf of Jesus and plant new bodies of local believers (Moreau et al. n.p.). The mission of the church, according to the reading, is a sacred and special relationship with God. It is an act of God’s relegation of his work to humanity through people. In this sense, a missionary can take many forms, and it could be understood
Student’s Last Name 2 subjectively by people believing that any act of kindness may constitute a missionary work; nevertheless, for as long as a ‘missionary’ work is carried out for the purpose of enlightening people about Jesus, then it should have sufficiently given justice to the concept of missionary and missions.
