Experience with Theology
Theology is defined as the study and understanding of God. When I hear the word theology, I
think of everything I am not. I think of theology philosophers, pastors, ministers, and those
actively working to share the belief of God in their daily lives. I also think about theologist
falling in a category of having negative impressions regarding tattoos, piercings, etc. Growing
up, I came from a Christian household, but evangelicalism and theology were foreign words to
me. I initially knew they were both associated with religion, but never knew which one(s)
specifically or took the initiative to see what they meant. I believe in God and work to
consistently apply theology to my daily life, but I never looked at myself as a theologist in doing
so. When I attended Liberty University residentially a few years ago, I heard others say
“theology was hard”, which is another outlook I had towards it. After completing the readings
and assignments for this first week, I now am familiar with the word theology, and that everyone
studying and understanding God is considered a theologist. What it comes down to is whether or
not we are a faithful theologist, actively applying theology to our daily lives.
Before the first week’s assignments, I did not think there was ever a time where I have
experienced theology in my life. Growing up in a religious family helped shape my faith
tremendously, but being uneducated on theology, I was unaware of the experiences I have had

with it. I was blessed to be able to grow up learning about God and His Word with a supporting
family, church environment, and friends. Although, while we are young, we don’t truly grasp
learning about God and everything He has done for us. As I was preparing myself for college, I
came across Liberty University. Considering I knew about God, but wasn’t fully confident in
understanding him, I became eager and excited to further my education in my degree and faith at
Liberty. Coming to Liberty University and taking classes that furthered my knowledge on God
and the Word of God is probably the most sincere time I have experienced studying theology. I
have always had a variety of questions regarding religion and God, but was not comfortable
expressing them. I never wanted to say the wrong things, so while studying different religious
courses at Liberty University, it allowed me to have the opportunity of taking my time
experiencing theology and thoroughly absorbing the information being taught with an open heart
and mind.
Although it is important for me to strive for excellence in this course, I truly hope to be able to
complete theology and take away valuable information that I can apply to my life moving
forward. As I have hit my 20s and been more independent with my living, it has been extremely
important for me to continue to stay disciplined in growing my faith. It hasn’t always been an
easy path, but throughout all of the challenges and adversity I have encountered and still face, I
learned that it is a lot better keeping God at the center of my focus, rather than handling
everything on my own. By the end of this course, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of God,
Jesus, and the Holy Spirit and how to consistently apply theology to my daily life. Presently, I
tend to apply my knowledge for a short duration of time and eventually fall off track. With the

readings providing insight on not just the information, but the application of the information is
really important to me with where I am currently at on my religious journey. I also am looking to
truly fall in love more with God, His Word, and His creations, developing a deeper relationship
with Him.
