Name: Noah Duran Date: 22 June 2021 Section: New Testament Bible Study Assignment Passage: Acts 8:26-39 Instructions: For this assignment, you will be studying a story from the book of Acts. More specifically, you will be studying the narrative of Philip and the Ethiopian from Acts 8:26-39. You will use the template below to complete a study of this passage. In your study, you will use the skills of Ob- servation, Interpretation, Correlation, and Application that you have become familiar with through your reading in Everyday Bible Study. I. Observation A. T have read Acts 8:26-39 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. You will find a copy of the NASB, ESV, CSB, and NLT in your myWSB Library. 0 Yes 0 No B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find as long as you meet the minimum amount. Similarities Differences Verse 35 In both versions, Phillip told the Ethiopian “the good news about Je- sus” starting at the scripture he was reading. Verse 26 ESV: The road to Gaza is not men- tioned while the place is a “desert place”. NIV: The road to Gaza is referred to as “the desert road”.
Verse 38 Verse 27 In both versions, Phillip baptizes the | ESV: Phillip meets a eunuch who is Ethiopian when the chariot comes “a court official of Candace, queen of across a body of water. the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure”. NIV: Phillips meets a eunuch who is “an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake”. Verse 39 ESV: The Spirit of the Lord “carried Phillip away”. NIV: The Spirit of the Lord “suddenly took Phillip away”. C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying 1. Main characters: (List them) Phillip, the Ethiopian eunuch, an angel of the Lord, and the Spirit of the Lord. 2. Plot: (50-100 words) An angel of the Lord tells Philip to travel to Gaza from Jerusalem and when he does he sees an Ethiopian eunuch reading a passage of scripture from Isaiah. The Spirit tells Phillip to go to the chariot where he tells the Ethiopian about the meaning of the scripture and the good news of Je- sus. After telling the eunuch about Jesus, the eunuch asks Phillip to baptize him. After doing so the Spirit of the Lord takes Phillip away and the eunuch goes on rejoicing. 3. Story structure: (50-100 words) Hint: Be sure to consult the section on the narrative/story structure given in the tuto- rial for this assignment (found in Week 3). Introduction: The Spirit of the Lord tells Phillip to go from Jerusalem to Gaza on a specific road.
Inciting incident: Phillip sees an Ethiopian eunuch reading from the prophet Isaiah. Rising tension: Phillip asks the eunuch if he understands the words that he is reading. The eu- nuch says “How can I, unless someone guides me?” (ESV Acts 8:30). The eunuch asks who the prophet is speaking of in the passage. Climax: Phillips tells the eunuch of Jesus and as they pass by some water Phillip baptizes the eu- nuch. Falling Action: As they come out of the water the Spirit of the Lord takes Phillip away while the eunuch is rejoicing. Resolution: The eunuch has been saved by Phillip after hearing the good news of Jesus and being baptized. C. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Question” for observation. Remember to consult the chapter “How to Ask Key Questions” (Chapter 17) and the chapter on studying Acts (Chapter 37). This will help you be more detailed in your an- swers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” 1. Who: » Spirit of the Lord Phillip » The Ethiopian eunuch 2. What: Phillip is called by God to travel to Gaza, where he meets an Ethiopian eunuch along the way who he “heared him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?” (Acts 8:30 ESV) The eunuch asks Phillip who the prophet is talking about and then Phillip tells him of the good news of Christ. As the chariot they are riding in passes by water the eunuch asks “What prevents me from being baptized?” (Acts 8:36 ESV) They go down to the water and Phillip baptizes the eunuch. Whenever they came up from the water the Spirit of the Lord takes Phillip away and the eunuch goes on rejoicing. 3. Where: * Desert road that leads from Jerusalem to Gaza

4. When: o After the resurrection of Jesus » After preaching to the samaritans » Before the conversion of Saul 5. Why: What was the eunuch confused about when reading the words of the prophet Isaiah? He was confused about the person who Isaiah was talking about in his words, he won- dered if Isaiah was referring to himself or to someone else. Who instructed Phillip to go on this journey to Gaza and why did he talk to the eunuch? The Spirit of the Lord instructed Phillip to go on the journey and to approach the eu- nuch’s chariot. It was at the chariot that Phillip heard the eunuch reading the words of Isaiah. What happened to Phillip after he baptized the eunuch? Phillip was taken away by the Spirit of the Lord after he baptized the eunuch. 6. How: How did the Spirit of the Lord intervene in the life of Phillip and of the eunuch? The Spirit of the Lord instructed Phillip to go on this adventure and to approach the eu- nuch in his chariot. The Spirit of the Lord changed the life of the eunuch by using Phillip to show him the good news of Jesus. How did Phillip share the story of Jesus with the eunuch? Phillip explained who the prophet Isaiah was referring to in the text and most likely how Jesus had died so that we may be saved. I1. Interpretation A. Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (100-400 words) explain what you think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember two things. First, this passage is made up of both action and dialogue. Thus, this passage is both showing and telling us something. Second, words like “I,” “We,” “Us, and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. Interpretation is about “then and there” and not “here and now.” We were not there so the passage is not about us. Our “part” in the passage is the application or how we will respond to God’s Word.
The author’s main point of the this passage is to highlight how the Spirit of the Lord can use any- one to make changes in other’s lives. God calls all to share in the joys of Jesus and he calls those who have heard the good news to share that with those who have not. This point is made in the action of the passage by the way that Phillip goes out of his way to follow the word of God and to talk to and connect with the Ethiopian man he meets. It’s through the questions asked by the Ethiopian eunuch that Phillip is able to share the good news of Jesus with him and leads to the eunuch’s baptism. This passage is a prime example of how God is working through his followers to spread the good news of Christ to all people. B. Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. You should be able to express this principle in 1-3 sentences. The principle of the passage is that we should spread the news of Jesus to all people. We all have been given the salvation through Christ, now we must be the messengers who tell others what has been done. II1. Correlation A. How does this passage from Acts fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State that type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and explain why you believe this to be so? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. B. How does your principle from Acts 8:26-39 fit with the rest of the Scripture? This principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation section. If your prin- ciple is a true Biblical principle it will be reflected throughout the Scriptures. Where is the principle discovered in this New Testament narrative found elsewhere in the Scrip- tures? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length.
C. How does this passage from Acts 8:26-39 reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State and explain at least one way that the principle of this passage identifies something of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. IV. Application What points of application can be made using the Four Questions for Application? State and explain 1 point of application for each of these four questions. Your explanation for each of these points should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. A. The question of duty B. The question of character C. The question of goals
