Eternal Family
REL 200C
Unit 3: Video Study
Before Watching the Videos
Step 1:
Read the following paragraph from The Family: A Proclamation to the World, and provide the information requested.
"
In THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted his plan by which His children could obtain a
physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of eternal life.
The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to
return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.”
1.
How does the doctrine of Pre-mortality impact or influence your understanding of the Plan of Salvation?
Before we were born we lived with our heavenly father and we were part of the plan to come to
earth and have agency to choose what is right so we can return to live with our heavenly father again. 2.
Paragraph three mentions a “plan” that we accepted before we came into mortality. What kind of plan was it? How would you explain the plan to another? (simplified)
The plan was to have agency, and trials. We would come to earth with the power to choose between right and wrong and have people and things like the book of Mormon to help guide us
on the right path. We are trying to be the best we can be to become like our heavenly father. Then when we die we will go back to heaven and be judged to see which kingdom we will go to based on how well we followed God’s commandments and what life we lived. 3.
How does obtaining a physical body help us gain experience and progress toward perfection? How do physical strengths and weaknesses contribute to our growth?
Without a physical body we wouldn’t be able to experience trials that are going to help us. When we experience trials they can help us become better because we can learn from our mistakes and become better. Having physical strengths and weaknesses helps make us unique, we are going to have different things we go through than our neighbors. We can use our strengths to help others when they are struggling with their weaknesses and vice versa. 4.
Why participate in ordinances? What role do they play in our progression and our ability to gain Eternal Life?
Eternal Family
REL 200C
The first ordinance that comes to mind is Baptism, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. When we are baptized our sins are washed away, and then we can repent and take the sacrament each week. When we have the holy ghost with us, he can help give us direction and warning when something might be wrong. After we have received ordinances for ourselves we can participate in ordinances for the dead for those who didn’t have the opportunity to receive them when they were on earth. While Watching the Videos
Step 2:
Watch the three
video segments linked on Canvas (I-Learn). While watching the videos, provide answers
to the following questions.
Questions:
1.
What doctrines or principles (core concepts) were you taught during these video segments?
There were so many things that stood out to me while watching these videos. The thing that stood out to me the most was how strong every persons testimony on this subject is. They have
a very strong testimony and are very sure about everything they said. I really liked what Nelson said here, “
From the Prophet Joseph Smith. We also learn that God has a time appointed when He will bring all His subjects who have obeyed His voice and kept His commandments into His celestial rest. This rest is of such perfection and glory that man
needs
preparation before he can, according to the laws of that kingdom, enter it and enjoy its blessings. God has given certain laws to the human family, which if observed, are sufficient to prepare them to inherit this rest.”” I have never thought about the fact that coming here to earth is preparing us to inherit the rest after we die. In the 3
rd
video Bednar said, “
The Holy Spirit of Promise is the ratifying power of the Holy Ghost. When sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise, an ordinance, vow, or covenant is binding on earth and in heaven. Receiving this stamp of approval from the Holy Ghost is the result of faithfulness, integrity, and steadfastness in honoring gospel covenants in the process of time. However, this sealing can be forfeited through unrighteousness and transgression.” I have never thought of this is that way before. We need to live honestly while always trying to become better. 2.
What impressions came to you? What were you personally taught during this Video Deep Dive session?
I liked the part where Bensen said, “
And nothing is going to startle us more when we pass through the veil to the other side than to realize how well we know our father and how familiar His face is to us.” I love how in all 3 of these videos you can tell that every single one of them has a very strong testimony on the gospel of Jesus Christ but even more importantly on our premortal life and life to come. When hearing how strongly so many others can talk about the gospel it really helped me feel the spirit to know the truth of their words. It has helped me have
a better understanding and stronger testimony on the premortal life and plan of salvation.
