W09 Assignment: Reflection and Insight This week you were asked to choose and use a specific study skill from this list: Substitution Setting Principles and Doctrine List and List Clustering and Clustering Flag Phrases and Flag Phrases Symbolism and Symbolism Visualize and Visualize Cause and Effect If needed, refer back to the Study Skills page (in Student Resources ) for detailed explanations of these skills. Assignment Instructions 1. Write at least two short paragraphs (200 words minimum) describing the most insightful/uplifting truths you found during your study this week. You could also include: personal application you will be making because of something you found this week, questions for your instructor, share a brief experience you had this week because of something you read, etc. (19 points) This week, I was able to read Matthew 21-22, Mark 11-12, Luke 19-20, and John 12. From my readings this week, I most enjoyed reading from John chapter 12. In this chapter, I was able to find some very helpful and interesting principles that I can apply to my own life. The story of Mary anointing Jesus Christ’s feet shows how she had the most upmost respect for our Lord and Savior. This shows an idea of selflessness and loyalty towards Christ. An experience that I had this week that these scriptures have helped me with is journaling while reading my scriptures. I have taken this more seriously and it has had a tremendous impact on my life. The principle of sacrificing things for the greater good of receiving blessings from the Lord and Savior is something that I have been working towards more and more. In general, John chapter 12 highlights the idea of selfless love and loyalty to Jesus Christ. It exhorts believers to show their devotion to, and love for, the Savior by doing acts of worship. Mary's example is a potent reminder of the enduring value of dedication to Jesus Christ and the tremendous influence that real, selfless love has on a disciple's life. BYU-Idaho 1 REL 211
2. Give examples of how you used the study skill you selected this week while studying the New Testament. (5 points) The study skill that I chose to use this week was the cluster method. The way that I was able to study my scriptures this week with using this cluster method was first, going through the assignment reading and listening to the directions on how the cluster method is normally used. In the audio, it said that the clustering method is all about grouping the scriptures together because the scriptures are very useful when they are grouped together. The scriptures need each other, which is what the audio stated. I used the clustering method while reading my assigned scriptures for this week by grouping together verses that share the same meaning, message, or principle. For example, Matthew 22: 37-39 talked about one of the greatest commandments given to us disciples of Christ and children of God. This commandment was thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all Thy heart and to love thy neighbor. These few scriptures cannot not stand alone and give their full meaning and understanding, they need each other. 3. Why did you use this study skill in your analysis of the New Testament verses you wrote about above? (5 points) I chose to use this study skill because it is one that I have been practicing using in my own personal scripture study and didn’t even know it. When I read the scriptures on my own time, I often would highlight scriptures together that follow each other with the same concept and idea. This is the study skill of clustering. I did not realize it was so until I read more about the study skill I wanted to do for my assignment this week. Using the cluster study skill in my analysis of the New Testament helped me get a better understanding of what I was reading, and I was able to find the meaning and the principles a lot better.
