Reflection and Synthesis Report
Name: Lindsey Till
Week #: 07
Instructions
In the table provided below, you will complete your reflection and synthesis responses for this week. Be sure to complete each Response section. When referencing scripture or other materials, only include a brief or abbreviated summary along with the citation as these cannot be included in the required word count. When you have completed the document, save it to your computer and follow the instructions in your course to submit the assignment to your instructor.
1.
Did you complete all the assigned reading for the week? [Yes ⃝ xor No ⃝]
2.
Article of Faith
Please identify the Article of Faith studied this week
Response: We studied the 6
th
article of faith this week. This one states that we believe in the same organization that existed in the primitive church. This means we believe in the church that existed in the times of Jesus. Such as the same apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists and so forth.
3.
Explanation of Key Events and
Scriptures
Demonstrate your comprehension of fundamental truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and your ability to use the scriptures to teach them. Be sure to include specific scripture references from the assigned readings
Scenario: Imagine you have been asked by a family member or friend to share what you believe about the truths and events you studied this week. Share in your own words several
insights as though you are really trying to teach someone. Include at least three scripture references to support the truths you teach (you may reference them, but there is no need to quote them). Share your testimony as you would when teaching someone. Your response will be evaluated by the following criteria:
1.
200–300 words in length
(please include your word count at the bottom of the section).
2.
Include at least 3 scripture references
.
Response: This week we talked about the church, and how it was organized and how important it is. In D&C 109:72-80 we can
see that we need to remember the church and that the church will become a great mountain to fill the whole earth. It also talks about how our garments need to be pure and that we will have crowns of glory on our heads. This just shows how important our church is, and that we need to remember and be grateful that the church was restored in our times. We can also look at D&C 20:1-4 where it talks about the importance of the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon proves the divinity of the latter-day work. We can also look at D&C 107:1-15 where it talks about the priesthood, and that it is broken up into two parts: Melchizedek and the Aaronic. It also goes on to talk about what each priesthood holder can do and what offices they can hold within the church. We need to know this to know and understand the importance of the priesthood in our church, we would not have the restored church without the priesthood. We would not have blessings or be able to receive the gift of the holy ghost without the priesthood.
Word Count: 214 4. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences
of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about
the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your response.
5.
The world problem/issue I chose this week is:
religious intolerance/persecution
Response: Religious intolerance is never the answer, and you should never be hated or persecuted for what you believe in. In our own church history Joseph Smith and his followers had such hard times because of religious intolerance. I think our church still gets a lot of intolerance because we have the priesthood, and those callings are held by men. But we that Joseph Smith lived in a time of great religious excitement and no one truly knew who had the proper authority to act in God’s name. Thankfully though because of Joseph, he was able to restore that proper authority. To help guide us and lead us back to our Heavenly Father. We also see in Moroni 6 that the proper way and authority to be baptized is through the priesthood. We have to look to Joseph’s example when dealing with persecution. He handled
it with grace, and was never violent towards the people who were so hateful towards him. So we have to remember in times of hatred and persecution, we need to be like Jesus, or like Joseph. Do not take the hateful path, or the vengeful path. We need to choose the path of love and grace. I think sometimes we forget in our times how hard Joseph really had it. Yes, we have some religious intolerance but it is not nearly as devastating as it was back then. We need to hold firm in our beliefs like Joseph Smith. He never wavered in what he believed in and what he saw. Whenever someone gives me a hard time for what I believe in, I try to ask them if they have something they believe in and if they do would they like it if someone was judging them for what they believed in. I think sometimes people get so engrained in what they believe in that they forget that it is completely ok for others to believe differently from
them. Word Count:324
