Benchmark—Gospel Essentials
God can be described as many different things; healer, comforter, redeemer, Father and so on. The Christian worldview views God as being one with His Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus was sent to atone for all sin of mankind. Human nature and human purpose often go hand in hand. The nature of Jesus is comparable to the characteristics of God, since He was sent directly from Him, according to Christianity. Christians are promised that through Jesus, a new creation is made (YouVersion, n.d., 2 Cor. 5:17 ESV) and life is restored. Along with restoration,
comes redemption of all sin. Christianity focuses on the Gospels, or the accounts of Jesus and the
miracles performed by Him in His ministry. Jesus had 12 disciples that followed His teachings and spread the Gospel. The Christian foundation is made up of the nature of God, nature of humanity, nature of Jesus and restoration and directly correlate to the Christian worldview.
Gospel Essential Beliefs
Nature of God
In the Christian worldview, God is made up of three components: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God created the world and mankind in His image (YouVersion, n.d., Gen. 1:26-27 ESV) and sin entered the world. Adam and Eve had eaten from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil; this was the direct reason for sin entering the world. Now knowing of good and evil, Adam and Eve were exiled from the Garden of Eden. The world was different and not the original design that God had created. With good and evil in the world, there was free will that mankind was given; people now had the choice to make good and bad decisions. God had promised to give mankind a chance at eternal life with Him through His Son Jesus Christ. God is
described as a healer, comforter, provider, creator, and Father. God provided eternal life through 2
His son Jesus, who was born of a virgin. Jesus’s purpose was to seek and save the lost, and to pay for all sin through His death. Jesus had died and was risen, or resurrected, and provided mankind with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells within those who accept Jesus as Lord.
Nature of Humanity
Nature of humanity can be described as, through the Christian worldview, humans having
remaining characteristics of God; the characteristics are being capable of love, creation, reasoning, exploration, worship with God, sacrificing of time/resources, justice, and the knowledge of good and evil (Grand Canyon University, 2020, Topic 2 Overview) Human nature can be referred to as what defines one being human. Humans have emotions, thoughts, and the ability to make coherent decisions. Human purpose refers to what can be achieved as a goal in human life. Nature and purpose are separate concepts. Nature is what naturally comes as being human, whereas purpose is what a human can decide to do with the nature within. The root cause
of human problems can come from many different factors. Christians believe that human problems had derived from the Fall of Adam and Eve. One that may not identify as Christian may consider the root of human problems from childhood trauma or being subjected to an event that changed the perspective of the person. It can be argued that problems come from other outside forces, like Karma; what is done can come back with good or bad Karma and has a good or bad result depending on the initial decision.
Nature of Jesus
The nature of Jesus can be mainly described in the Bible in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These books are the accounts in the perspectives of 4 out of 12 disciples that followed Jesus and His teachings in His ministry. Jesus is described throughout the New 3

Testament: an account of the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus had sat with sinners, who were defined as tax collectors, prostitutes, the sick and destitute people. The identity of Jesus was that He was the Son of God. God had sent Jesus to be born, live a sinless life, and die for the sins of mankind. Jesus is seen as fully man, fully God with the Christian worldview. Jesus’s kingdom purpose was to teach others and show others that God is loving and wanted to grant eternal life through Him. Jesus’s work and identity are critical to the Christian worldview because the very existence of Him determined the future for all of humanity and having the chance at eternal life (Dawson, 2004). Through baptism and open confession of Jesus being Lord, mankind can have eternal life with God in heaven. Jesus had taught of the things people can do to serve and worship God in Spirit and in Truth. Restoration
To restore is to bring something back or to make something new (Diffey, 2020). The solution to human problems through the Christian worldview is to accept Jesus as Lord and follow God. To follow God is to obey His commands, worship Him, serve Him and serve/love others. Grace can be defined as favor from God. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (YouVersion, n.d., Heb. 11:1 ESV)”. Repentance can be defined as turning away from something and turning back to God. These three characteristics, grace, faith and repentance, are pivotal in Christian salvation because God had given mankind grace through the faith of Jesus, who was able to be seen for His miracles, proving His existence and providing an opportunity for people to repent of their sin and choose eternal life. Christians view the transformation of self through turning away from sin and choosing to do good in the name of Jesus. Transformation of society is through love and service. Jesus had talked about 4
loving others as themselves (YouVersion, n.d., Mark 12:31 ESV). To love one another and to serve one another under God unified would help society come closer and be less divided.
Christian Foundations
The Christian Foundation is based on three principles: repentance, redemption, and renewal. Repentance, as previously stated, is the turning away from sin and back to God. Redemption is the granting of salvation when accepting Christ as Lord (Grand Canyon University, 2020, Topic 5 Overview). Renewal refers to as being given new life as a follower of Jesus with the body, mind, and spirit. The nature of God, nature of humanity, nature of Jesus, and restoration are referred to as the Gospel Essentials (Diffey, 2020). Through these Gospel Essentials, the Christian worldview is defined. Knowing right from wrong and choosing the path of Jesus and leading a sinless life is the key to eternal life. The Bible speaks about good works, faith and serving with a pure heart. Repenting of sin, asking for forgiveness, being forgiven, and being renewed is the timeline of a Christian. Christians are challenged to choose Jesus each day and to choose to do good rather than give into selfish desires. Human nature isn’t naturally good,
according to the Christian worldview. Christians must make the intentional decision to make good choices and listen for God’s commands to obey them. Christians are given a new life through choosing Jesus.
Analysis of the Implications of the Christian Worldview
The implications of the Christian Worldview are meant to be inclusive and unifying. Regarding human value and dignity, the Christian worldview excels at making conscious decisions to be a better person individually and a better person in society. The teaching to help others who have less than you and love others that are different from you are positive aspects of the Christian worldview. The Christian worldview in terms of salvation is much different than 5
other religions/worldviews. Jesus is considered the way to heaven and to have eternal life with God. Other worldviews contain sacrifices and offerings to be accepted by a higher power or God.
The advent, or coming of Jesus (Grenz, 1999) is pivotal in having eternal life. A person’s thinking and behavior can be influenced by the Christian worldview in terms of older practices of Jewish law; for example, to believe that homosexuals will go to hell derives from the Christian worldview, but the direct translations have an entirely different meaning. With this being said, it is important for people to find the truth through means of research and facts. Someone who believes in the Christian worldview would also choose to pray and worship God during the day, when someone who is an atheist would not do those things. It can be argued that Christianity is judgmental and hateful toward people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community due to mistranslations and generations of people believing one thing for so long. Also, the story of creation is confusing to those who don’t understand that the book of Genesis is actually a Chiasm, which is a structure of writing to reach a central point with the format as A, B, B, A.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Gospel Essentials are comprised of many concepts that fall under the Christian worldview. The nature of God is comprised of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The nature of humanity is made of human nature and knowledge of good and bad. The nature of Jesus is that He was sent by God to atone for sin of all mankind. Jesus had given the gift of the Holy Spirit through His death. Restoration is possible through Jesus, according to the Christian worldview. The Christian foundation fits in with the Christian worldview in the aspect of believing Jesus is fully man and fully God. The implications of the Christian worldview can lead to good or bad. It is up to the Christian to make the choice to find truth in the Bible through facts and correct translations of the Bible. To decide to love others, no matter how different, is 6

Christian like. To hate someone for being different is not. People have a choice to believe in what one wants, and it is ultimately up to the person to choose to believe wholeheartedly in something or believe in components of a religion or worldview.
