The roles of parents and children, as outlined in scripture, provide a foundational framework for family dynamics and relationships. Here are a few applications of the varying roles within a parent/child relationship. First and foremost we have the roles of parents, 1) Parents are to be nurturers and instructors. Scripture encourages parents to nurture and instruct their children in the ways of the Lord. Proverbs 22:6 states "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." A practical application of this would be parents spending time to teach their children about love, and the principles of righteousness through both words and actions. 2) Parents are to be role models of faith by demonstrating integrity, humility, and devotion to God. Ephesians 6:4 states “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." A practical application of this is to live a life of faithfulness and integrity before your children, showing them the importance of following Christ. 3) Parents are providers and protectors they are tasked with providing for the physical and emotional needs of their children and protecting them from harm. 1 Timothy 5:8 indicates "Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." The practical application to this would be for parents to work diligently to provide for their family’s needs and creating a safe and nurturing environment for them to thrive and grow. Next, we also have the roles of children. First and foremost honoring and obeying parents their parents. Children are called to honor and obey their parents as a reflection of their reverence for God. Scripture states within Ephesians 6:1-3"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'—which is the first commandment with a promise—'so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.'" Secondly, Children are to continuously learn and grow in wisdom as they are encouraged to seek wisdom and understanding, learning from their teachings of their parents and from God’s word. The practical application to this is for children to embrace opportunities for learning and growth, and seek out wisdom from God and those who guide them. Proverbs 1:8-9 states "Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck." 3) Children are also sought to respect authority and serve others, they should respect authority and serve others with humility and kindness. Showing respect for authority figures and demonstrating love and compassion towards others in their words and actions. Colossians 3:20 states "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord." By following these biblical principles and embracing their roles within the family, both parents and children can contribute to the cultivation of a loving, harmonious, and God-honoring household.
