Mary Porter March 22, 2015 Ephesians Chapter 4 1. The five-fold ministry has purposes. According to Ephesians 4 what are the purposes of those offices? Which of these, if this is true, is the calling on your life? How do you know that is the case? 2. In Ephesians 4:24-32, Paul outlines the attitudes and behaviors the new person must exhibit. List what those attitudes and behaviors are. Then take a personal assessment or inventory and determine which of these challenges remain. What specific steps can you take to deal with the challenges? 1. According to Ephesians 4:11, Paul stated, “And he gave some, apostles,; and some, prophets; and some evangelists; and some pastors and teachers. The Apostle The Greek word for apostle is “apostolos,” which means to delegate, messenger of the gospel, one that is sent forth and/or ambassador for Christ . The purpose of the Apostle is keep and extend the gospel message throughout the earth. Apostles is first ranked amongst the fivefold ministry. The reason Apostles are ranked first because they have abilities to
advance ahead; instill Godly knowledge and wisdom to the Body of Christ; and the extension of God’s Kingdom. The Prophet The Greek word for prophet is, “prof-ay-tace,” which means to tell, or inspired speaker. The purpose of the prophet is to speak forth The Word of God and what God is saying to His church or individuals. The purpose of the prophet is to exhort, encourage and build up God’s people according to His divine and inspired word. The purposes of Prophets play an intricate part in God’s Kingdom because God is divinely speaking through them to edify His Bride, The Church. The “Body of Christ” is strengthen and encouraged as result of the prophet’s edification and exhortation that is coming strictly from God’s Throne. The Evangelist The Greek word for “Evangelists” is euag-ge-li-on, which means a missionary, bearer of good news or tidings. The purpose of the evangelists are to proclaim and/or preach (1Cor 15:1-4) the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Evangelists bring forth the “Good News of Jesus Christ,” but they also warn people and individuals about sin and not yielding their lives over to Christ. The Evangelists explains God’s remedy for sin, which is the gospel message. And it includes a clear call to repent, turn away from sin and surrender their lives over to a loving and caring God. (Rom 1:17, Rom. 10:9-13). The Pastor
The Greek word for pastor is,”poi-men,” which means a Shepard, protector, and ruler of a flock. The purposes of pastors are to nourish and feed God’s sheep. Pastors are to protect and guide the sheep from wolves, outsiders and thieves that are not part of The Kingdom of God. (Lk. 2:8). Pastor’s roles are usually nurturers, mentors, caregivers and peacemakers. Pastors have more contact and interaction with the sheep versus the apostle, evangelists, prophet and teacher. The Teacher The Greek word for teacher is, “di-da-sko,” which means to instruct, impart knowledge and disseminate information. Thus, the purposes of teachers within the Body of Christ is to make sure the Sheep of God are being fed properly. The teachers are able to address/answer questions, give instructions and provide knowledge and wisdom pertaining to God’s Word. The “Teacher” of God’s word shouldn’t be a novice. The Teacher of God’s Word should be mature or seasoned with the wisdom and knowledge pertaining to executing His Word with precision and accuracy. NOTE: The “Fivefold” Ministry gifts are given by Jesus Christ to edify and equip His Body for the extension of His Glorious Kingdom. The gifts are also given to allow Believers to become one body regarding walking in the principles of God’s Word. The calling of “ Evangelist” is upon my life because of my passion, desire and burden for all people to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and have a relationship with Him. It doesn’t matter about the individual socioeconomic statuses, backgrounds, cultures or race. My desire is that all men will come to know and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior before they close their eyes in death. I know I’m called to the office of an Evangelist because God told me. I didn’t understand why I would breakdown and weep all the time when someone gave

his/her life to Jesus. Over 37 years ago, I would ask God, why I always cry when I see people giving their lives to you. He didn’t respond to my question until 1992. God told me to read Isiah 49. After I read Isiah 49, I began to weep because I knew then God had called me to reach, proclaim and preach the gospel message of Jesus Christ. Talking and discussing The “Gospel of Jesus Christ,” become so easy and natural to me as I explain His love to unbelievers. I’m not afraid to tell anyone that will listen about this awesome news that “Jesus Christ” died, was buried, raised from the dead, ascended on high and He’s coming back again, just for you. My role as an Evangelist also includes edifying and equipping other believers to carry out, execute and deliver God’s Word with boldness, compassion and love. The calling of a “Pastor” began 30 years ago. Although some pastors doesn’t have to have a building or an edifice to watch over the sheep of God, I find myself calling and making sure the sheep of God is doing good. I visit the sick sheep, minister to the wounded sheep, go after and welcome the lost sheep and encourage the discouraged sheep. Some of the sheep call me their “mentor,” but God has called me their Pastor. As their pastor, when the sheep strays, I don’t beat or tear them down with words or actions. I speak life and the power of God’s forgiveness. As a Pastor, I have provided for the sheep regarding financially, physically, mentally and most importantly, spiritually. I do understand that sheep can be very manipulative, but God has given me knowledge and wisdom pertaining to each sheep he has entrusted me with. The calling of “Teacher” begin in 1982. My desire is that God’s people will have divine knowledge, instruction, wisdom, insight, revelation and illumination pertaining to God’s Word. I know God has called me concerning the role/purpose of a teacher because of my passion and desire for His people to understand Him more clearly through “His Word.” As a teacher of God’s
Holy Word, I have to make sure people (individuals and collectively) understand how powerful and life changing His Word is and always will be in The Kingdom of God. God’s mandate on my life to teach His people is not taken for granted. I will be held more accountable because I am a teacher and I have to give Godly instruction, knowledge and wisdom to the people of God. As an Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher, my purpose is to edify and equip the Body of Christ. As a result of edification and equipping, the people of God will grow and live their lives according to His Holy Word. 2. Paul is saying that our new attitudes and behaviors consist of: being a new man which was created in righteousness and ‘true holiness.” The righteousness and True Holiness Paul is talking about is living a yielded life of God without practicing sin every day. God’s righteousness (or justice) is the natural expression of His Holiness. The Believer must be opposed to all sin and unrighteousness just like God is opposed to all sin and unrighteousness. We are supposes to emulated God and his nature, (i.e. caring, loving, patient, compassionate, gentle, merciful, kindhearted, forgiving and faithful). As believers, our lives should be that of a servant committed and dedicated to Our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. If Believers are dedicated, yielded and committed to God, our lives and character will be demonstrated as Righteous and True Holiness. Now we are made righteous (justified by Jesus’ blood), but our lives should reflect what we are…….renewed, regenerated, righteous and holy……. My personal challenges are being patient and gentle. I know that my patience is very short and it filters onto innocent individuals. I want everything to be completed fast. And if things or situations are not going as fast as I think they should, I become frustrated I’m irritated. As a result of my impatience, I can be very Kurt with people and individuals as well. My tone, body language and facial expressions always
exposes me to how I’m really feeling at the moment. The steps I should be taking is fasting and praying and yield to God, daily. When I am aware of my impatient and ungentle spirit, I remind myself that I am God’s representative, now act like it……….
