Galatians Galatians Introduction to Galatians - Galatians expresses Paul’s concern that believers in the Galatian churches were straying from the Gospel in favor of a “different Gospel - In his response to their confusion, Paul provides of the most substantial treatments of justification in the New Testament - Paul is concerned that they properly understand not only the basis of their salvation, but its profound implications for their lives Special Features - The early church fathers wrote more commentaries on Galatians than any other New Testament book - Galatians was a favorite of the Protestant Reformer, Martin Luther Introductory Issues: Authorship - The acceptance of Paul’s authorship of Galatians is so widespread that many scholars do not even address the issue - Pauline authorship is so convincing that Galatians serves as the standard by which the authenticity of other letters is tested Introductory Issues: Destination - There is a dispute as to whether Paul was writing to the ethnic Galatians (“the Northern Galatian Theory ”), or to those in the Roman province of Galatia (“the Southern Galatian Theory ”) - The difference between the two views has ramifications for the background of the epistle, particularly its dating - Northern Galatian Theory Some key texts: Acts 13:13, 14; 16:6; 18:23 It appears that geographical boundary lines changed, and scholars view the geography anachronistically - Southern Galatian Theory Paul knew his readers personally (Galatians 1:18; 4:11-15, 19) The route described in Acts 16:16 and 18:23 seem to be a Southern Galatian route Galatia was the only word that would have encompassed Antioch, Lystra, Iconium, and Derbe In 1 Corinthians 16:1, Paul referred to the Galatian churches as among the contributors to the collection for Jerusalem - Conclusion Neither can be proven decisively, but in a view of textual evidence, the Southern Galatian Theory is strongest Introductory Issues: Dating
- While it is clear that Galatians was one of the first Pauline letters written, the dating of the epistle depends on one’s perspective on its destination (Northern or Southern Theory) - Dating for Northern Galatian Theory: during Paul’s second or third missionary journey (mid to late 50s ) - Dating for Southern Galatian Theory: before or around the time of the Jerusalem Council (________ AD) Purpose - After Paul preached the Gospel through Galatia, ________ infiltrated the churches and preached a different “Gospel” that required the keeping of the _______ for _______ - Acts 13:38-39: “Everyone who believes in him is justified from everything, which you could not be justified from through the Law of Moses.” Outline - 1:1-5 – Opening - 1:6-4:11 – Rebuke: Paul’s Gospel and the “Other Gospel” - 4:12-6:10 – Appeal: Choose the Liberty of Life in the Spirit - 6:11-18 – Conclusion Rebuke: Paul’s Gospel and the “Other Gospel” (Galatians 1:6-4:11) - The _______ realities (Galatians 1:1-2:21) - The _______ realities (Galatians 3:1-4:11) Appeal: Choose the Liberty of Life in the Spirit (Galatians 4:12-6:18) - You are children of the free woman (Galatians 4:12-31) - You are to ______ a life of liberty (Galatians 5:1-6:18) Theological Themes - Justification by _______ vs. Works of the Law A person is justified by ________ , ________ from works of the Law Paul uses the example of ________ as one who was justified by faith, ________ to the law (Galatians 3:8) - ________ of Justification From a Jewish perspective, the observance of the law ________ an individual as a member of God’s people It is through participation in the ________ that a person is saved Those who are members of the New Covenant are those who _______ and _______ the Holy Spirit
