In your own words, describe 3 significant ideas made by the author and 2 statements of personal benefit learned in the reading and cite the page number(s) where they are found. Entries below should be a minimum of 3 sentences long each. There is no maximum length. Significant Ideas from Author 1. On page 5, the author talks about how the Calvinistic doctrine of Total Inability, undermines the biblical doctrine of the free will of man. In Calvinism, it’s believed that sinful man is unable to come to Christ. But according to the words of Jesus Christ Himself, sinful man can come to the Savior, and he also has the power and volition to determine not to come to Him. As a response, the author argues that a man's problem is not a supposed inability to come to God but rather an unwillingness to do so. 2. On page 15, the author talks about how the Calvinistic doctrine of Limited Atonement attacks on the doctrine of the love of God. According to Edwin Palmer, a Calvinist, Christ died just for the “elect” as he defines the word world so it will agree with Calvinism’s definition of elect, those chosen by God for salvation. The author cites John 3:16-17 to prove that God’s love extends to all humanity. 3. On page 24, the author talks about how the assurance of Salvation is under attack by Calvinism. Calvinists believe that they must persevere in faith and obedience to be saved. However, since no Christian perfectly perseveres in faith and obedience all the time, no Calvinist can know for sure that he is one of the elect. This false doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints leads to doubt and no assurance at all for many of them. Statements of Personal Benefit 1. I liked how the authors reassures on how every saved person can’t lose their salvation. This serves as a reminder that God promises us in Scripture our assurance of salvation, and not about perseverance. I can clearly look at, 1 John 5:11-13 and see that it does not teach that a person must persevere in faith and obedience to make it to heaven. (pg. 25) 2. I liked how the author was able to argue against the Calvinist doctrine of Limited Atonement in terms of the Love of God. He clearly emphasizes that we should not follow anything that’s not said from Christ Himself. This also makes me understand the importance of reading
scripture with wisdom and knowledge, as it can often been interpreted wrong. He also proves the truth that God’s love extends to all people, unsaved and saved. (pg. 16)
