Homework Task - Sacred Texts Qs
1.
How does the Talmud, including the Mishnah and the Gemara contribute to helping Jewish people follow God’s commandments in an ever
-changing world? The Talmud, composed of the Mishnah and Gemara, has an immense influence over the Jewish people and has a significant contribution in aiding individuals of the Jewish faith to follow God’s commandments in an ever-changing world. I claim the above statement due to the Gemara. In essence, the Gemara, the latter half of the Talmud, is a collection of analyses provided by rabbis and other renowned Jewish figures, with the sole purpose of aiding the Jewish people to apply the teaching of the Torah to new situations that arose in day-to-day life. These analyses or commentaries are heavily opinionative and are based on how an individual can interpret context. With that being stated, in some iterations of the Gemara, there is a possibility that rabbis and other renowned Jewish figures will convey the ideal of the text to fit a certain demographic and the current state of society. 2.
Describe the significance of the Shabbat (Sabbath) in Jewish tradition, its connection to the creation story, and key rituals associated with it. The Shabbat, also referred to as Sabbath, is an incredibly significant Jewish tradition for according to tradition, the Sabbath commemorates God's creation of the world in six days and the commandment to observe and keep the seventh day, the Sabbath, holy. Some prominent key rituals enacted during Shabbat includes lighting candles to usher in the day, reciting blessings over wine and bread during the festive meal, engaging in communal prayers at the synagogue, and refraining from work and certain activities. 3.
Explain the concept of a minyan in Jewish communal prayer. Can you think of similar instances in other faiths or in society where people come together in prayer? A minyan is a form of Jewish communal prayer where a gathering of at least ten Jewish adults or individuals who are deemed as sufficient of age, band together to recite prayers, such as the Kaddish and engage in practices, such as public Torah reading. One similar example of the stated Jewish tradition is Qurbana. Qurbana, also referred to as eucharistic liturgy, is a gathering of believers for the communal celebration of the Eucharist and other sacred rites, which pertain numerous similarities to minyan in Judaism.

Read through the Amidah prayer. Identify 2-3 parts that stand out to you and explain why you have selected these One segment from the Amidah prayer that stood out to me was “Seliah,”
or “Bring Forgiveness. I chose the said segment due it is similarities it shares with Psalms 51. The stated segment highlighted numerous parallels between it and Psalms 51, especially with both emphasizing forgiveness, reconciliation, and repentance. Another section of the Amidah prayer that stood out to me was the “Avot,”
commonly referred to as “the Father.”
I chose the stated excerpt due to it pertaining numerous similarities with the Nicene Creed. During the stated sections, there is an underlying theme emphasizing the greatness and glory of God, which is similar to many excerpts
found within the Nicene Creed. One prominent example of this is “We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.”
