In your own words, describe 3 significant ideas made by the author and 2 statements of personal benefit learned in the reading and cite the page number(s) where they are found. Entries below should be a minimum of 3 sentences long each. There is no maximum length. Significant Ideas from Author 1. On page 5, the author talks about the concept of predestination by examining key passages in the New Testament. He explains that in Acts 4:28, the predestined action is identified as the cross of Christ. This means that in the Bible, God uses the word predestination for another context, such is the case in this verse meaning that God predestined the cross of Christ. 2. On page 14, the author explains that unlike Augustinian predestination, in the Bible election refers to God choosing for himself an individual or a group for service. As an example, the foundation of God electing a people for himself is found in his promise to Abram. He later emphasizes that if election is about God’s choice and if Genesis 12:1-3 is about election, then God elected Abram to bless him and to bless others through him. 3. On page 17, the author explains that another form of election that God made was that He elected, or chose, his Son to be Israel’s Messiah. Jesus is “chosen by God and precious to him” and “a chosen and precious cornerstone” (1 Pet 2:4, 6). The word “chosen” does not refer to believers alone since Matthew, Luke, and Peter also refer to Jesus as chosen by God. Statements of Personal Benefit 1. I liked how the author uses several verses to compare the definition of Augustine predestination and predestination in the Bible. This encourages me to approach biblical passages with a more discerning eye. This also helps me recognize that the term may be employed in diverse ways to convey God's predetermined actions beyond individual salvation. (Pg. 4) 2. I liked how the author was able to clarify on the biblical concept of election, contrasting it with Augustinian predestination. This emphasized that election is about God's purpose for service and blessing rather than just a predetermined status for salvation. In other words, predestination concerns God’s promises for believers. (Pg. 19)
