1 Reflection Paper Teresa Diaz Colorado Christian University BIB-102A-25007-SP24 - New Testament Introduction Mr. Scott Cheatham February 25, 2024
2 Reflection Paper I had never heard the term canon until this week's reading in a survey of the New Testament where the author explains” The New Testament canon consists of books accepted by the early church as divinely inspired. The term canon originally meant “measuring reed” but developed the metaphorical meaning “standard” (compare the literal and metaphorical meaning of “yardstick”). As applied to the New Testament, canon refers to those books accepted by the churches as the standard that governs Christian beliefs and conduct” (Gundry 2012 pg63) I also learned this week by reading how God guided the early church in those evaluations of the books that were accepted as standard (Gundry 2012). Chapter 4 in a survey of the New Testament helped give me a better understanding of how the bible came to be in its current form. We learn how Christians did not have the New Testament. “They therefore depended on the Old Testament, on oral tradition about Jesus' words and deeds and on messages from God spoken by Christian prophets” (Gundry 2012 pg63). We learn that books were still being written as the New Testament was being formed, how the books went through scrutiny, before they were accepted into the New Testament canon (Gundry 2012). Chapter 1 also helped in understanding by giving us insight into the history before and during the time of the making of the New Testament, helping us know why the bible was created, and allowing us to feel connected to what was going on at the time of the making of the New Testament. The reading this week sparked an interest in learning more about the bible to have better discernment as I read it. I am also curious about what did not make it into the canon of the New Testament. It did not spark any questions about the authenticity of the bible, due to the leading of God showing me and talking to me through his words, showing me that the Bible is God's truths.
