THE VALUE OF HISTORICAL CHRISTIAN TEACHING DISCUSSION 5 According to the Biblical Perspective, people began to abandon the Christian foundations of belief, the substance of Christian thought, and ethical teaching. However, there was and still is a remnant of faithful Christians who desire to share the Gospel truth ( Colorado Christian University , [Video] 2023). The Chicago Statement on Biblical “Inerrancy” was written and signed by three hundred noted scholars. It consists of nineteen articles of affirmations and denials, and a short statement that the Word of God is true and infallible and the Holy Spirit is the author. All the articles are strong, truthful statements. A couple of examples are as follows: Article XI affirms the whole Scripture was given by divine inspiration and denies the inspiration of Scripture can be affirmed in only some parts ( Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy with Exposition . (n. d.). Article XVII affirms the Holy Spirit bears witness to the Scriptures, assuring believers of God’s true written Word, and denies that this witness of the Holy Spirit operates in isolation from or against Scripture ( Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy with Exposition . (n. d.). Machen’s Christianity and Liberalism writings explain the battle against Christianity by diverse religious beliefs called Modernism or Liberalism. There has always been a debate with religion and science throughout the centuries. Liberalism attempts to solve the question? Can Christianity be maintained in a Scientific Age? They would like to reconcile Christianity with modern science. Unfortunately, only one side can win, there is no peace without victory. In today’s modern world, Liberalism is attempting to lead people away from true doctrine and distort the truth about Jesus and the Bible. However, the truth is “Christ died, that is history” It's the stories of events that caused people to believe, and Christianity continues today standing on the firm belief that the Bible is truth and Jesus cannot lie. Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill” ( Holy Bible , New International Women’s Study Bible, 2018)? Machen, (1923) states, “So many convictions have had to be abandoned that men have sometimes come to believe that all convictions must
go”. We are starting to see more Socialism and Utilitarianism creeping back into our educational system. Some states are ordering students to attend only public schools taking parental choices away from private or Christian school options. Our future generations will be greatly negatively affected if this continues as stated by Machen, “Material betterment has gone hand in hand with spiritual decline” (Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923 ). Christianity was founded on facts and proclaims first a gracious act of God, whereas liberalism appeals to man’s will. This is the difference between the two (Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923. , p.47). The Christian religion was founded on factual events that occurred centuries ago. Christians have to take back the lead and draw all men back to the truth. The Pauline Epistles are vital to the Christian religion because his writing was based on the Apostle's testimonies of what Jesus taught them and all the miracles, he performed in front of them. It was the story of events that caused people to believe. Paul stood firm on God’s Biblical doctrine and was faithful even while imprisoned. We must stand for righteousness and proclaim the truth about Jesus and the Gospel. References Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy with Exposition. (n. d.).
