Case Study
Name
:
Evelin Acosta
Case Study Option (B)
:
I chose case study B: Your roommate has met and fallen in love with someone who is not
a member of the Church. Your roommate does not know what to do because they want to be sealed in the
temple. What guiding principles would you offer your roommate?
Instructions
The purpose of this assignment is to
apply your knowledge and deepen your learning
by
responding to real life
examples that you or others may face in defending the Proclamation and the eternal family
.
Your response to the case study you have chosen may be written in essay format, or you may choose to write
your response as if you were speaking or writing directly to someone facing the situation described.
Your
response must show thought, reflection, pondering, and depth, and be presented with college-level writing
skills.
The following should be integrated into your response:
The gospel doctrines or principles that are involved in the case study, and how they help to clarify and
give direction in addressing the situation.
Messages from scripture, the proclamation, and the course readings for the current unit of study that
address the dilemma and how those messages would be helpful.
Your own suggestions and ideas about actions that would be helpful in addressing the issue.
Your response must include:
At least four references,
each from a
different talk or article
in the current course readings. These may
be direct quotes or paraphrases of statements, and must include appropriate in-text citations. (See
Good
Writing Practices for REL 200
)
A pertinent passage from the Proclamation
A scripture
that would support your thoughts and ideas
As an
option,
you may choose to use two statements from two of the most recent General Conference
addresses in place of two references from the current course readings
Be sure to connect the references to your thoughts and discuss why or how the reference helps to address the
situation in the case study
.
These assignments help you to dig deeply into the readings for the course and to
show your understanding of the content, but they are not a place to simply regurgitate what you have learned.
Please have at least 50% or more of the text be your thoughts and comments.
It may be helpful to
bold
or use
a
different color of text
for your references and citations. This will help you see how much of the text is from
quotes and words of others and how much is your own words.
Case Study Report
In 1-2 page(s), write a response to the case study that you have chosen and that meets the requirements
explained above.
Question or requirement 1: What gospel principles or doctrines are involved in the case study, and how do
they help to clarify and give direction in addressing the situation?

Marriage is defined in the dictionary as “a legally accepted relationship between a man and a woman in which
they live as husband and wife, or the official ceremony that results in a long and happy marriage.” However, for
members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, marriage involves more than an official ceremony.
“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes marriage is sacred and was ordained of God before the
foundation of the world.” We believe that marriage is not simply an act of love, but it’s a commandment that
God has given us, and it brings blessings to our lives. In the Proclamation we read, “The family is ordained of
God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the
bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity.”
For members of the church, marriage does not end when one of the spouses dies. This long-term perspective
helps us understand why we give so much importance to the well-being of the family. Our community believes
strongly that family is the heart of society and that it’s the place to help children become great and responsible
adults.
Elder Bruton Howard said “Eternal marriage is a principle which was established before the foundation of the
world and was instituted on this earth before death came into it. Adam and Eve were given to each other by God
in the Garden of Eden before the Fall.” The scripture says, “In the day that God created man, in the likeness of
God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them” (Gen. 5:1–2; emphasis added).
Question or requirement 2: Discuss what resources you used to address the dilemma and specific things that
could be done to resolve the issue.
I think the resources to solve this case study involve trusting the revelation in the Proclamation and having faith
in the promises God has given to those who make sacred covenants in the temple. He promises a continuation of
lives to those who are sealed together in the temple. Everyone who gets married and loves his partner would
desire to have an eternal life with that person, and this is no longer a dream for members of the church. We
strongly believe that families can be together for eternity.
President Nelson said, “Marriage brings greater
possibilities for happiness than does any other human relationship.” And if we focus on that truth principle, we
will be able to achieve great things.
Question or requirement 3: Drawing inspiration from the proclamation, scripture block, and talks, discuss how
these resources might help you help someone else with this same issue.
President Nelson said, “ A marriage sealed there launches a husband and wife into that grand order of unity so
necessary to the perfection of God’s work.”
Anyone who is thinking about getting married should consider the
importance of it and the role it plays in eternal life. Marriage should not be taken for granted, and it should be
the primary goal of those who are in a serious relationship. One amazing truth is that everyone can participate in
this ordinance if they work hard to become worthy of the temple. There is nothing in this world that will prevent
someone from having an eternal family if they have the desire for it.
Question or requirement 4: What advice would you give to others facing this same situation?
I would use the words of President Nelson “Marriage is the foundry for social order, the fountain of virtue, and
the foundation for eternal exaltation. Marriage has been divinely designated as an eternal and everlasting
covenant. Marriage is sanctified when it is cherished and honored in holiness. That union is not merely between
husband and wife; it embraces a partnership with God.”
Marriage is an incredible gift that God has given us, and we can honor it. I would recommend anyone who is
thinking of getting married to work hard and have the temple in mind. I cannot imagine how someone could
reject the glorious gift of having an eternal family. I know that the path may not be easy, but it is worth it.
