Case Study Name : Evelin Acosta Case Study Option (A, B, C, or D) : A: Your roommate will soon receive their endowment. They are feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about their readiness to enter the temple. What could you share that would help them feel more comfortable and build their confidence? Instructions The purpose of this assignment is to apply your knowledge and deepen your learning by responding to real life examples that you or others may face in defending the Proclamation and the eternal family . Your response to the case study you have chosen may be written in essay format, or you may choose to write your response as if you were speaking or writing directly to someone facing the situation described. Your response must show thought, reflection, pondering, and depth, and be presented with college-level writing skills. The following should be integrated into your response: The gospel doctrines or principles that are involved in the case study, and how they help to clarify and give direction in addressing the situation. Messages from scripture, the proclamation, and the course readings for the current unit of study that address the dilemma and how those messages would be helpful. Your own suggestions and ideas about actions that would be helpful in addressing the issue. Your response must include: At least four references, each from a different talk or article in the current course readings. These may be direct quotes or paraphrases of statements, and must include appropriate in-text citations. (See Good Writing Practices for REL 200 ) A pertinent passage from the Proclamation A scripture that would support your thoughts and ideas As an option, you may choose to use two statements from two of the most recent General Conference addresses in place of two references from the current course readings Be sure to connect the references to your thoughts and discuss why or how the reference helps to address the situation in the case study . These assignments help you to dig deeply into the readings for the course and to show your understanding of the content, but they are not a place to simply regurgitate what you have learned. Please have at least 50% or more of the text be your thoughts and comments. It may be helpful to bold or use a different color of text for your references and citations. This will help you see how much of the text is from quotes and words of others and how much is your own words. Case Study Report In 1-2 page(s), write a response to the case study that you have chosen and that meets the requirements explained above. The gospel doctrines or principles that are involved in the case study, and how they help to clarify and give direction in addressing the situation. BYU-Idaho 1 REL 200
Entering the temple for the first time is a new experience for everyone. As many people may think, entering the temple is not about the beauty of the building. Yes, there are beautiful chandeliers, and enhancing curtains, and the accessories are luxurious. However, what should attract the attention of a person when entering the temple is the peace that it gives. The Spirit is all around, and if one is humble enough, she or he will feel clearly how comforting it is. There are temples because we need them. “In the temples, members of the Church who make themselves eligible can participate in the most exalted of the redeeming ordinances that have been revealed to mankind.” Some of these ordinances are marriage, baptism for the dead, and sealings. Going to the temple is not just another church activity. It is a blessing, a gift, and an opportunity to grow spiritually every time we participate. The scriptures tell us about the blessings the temple brings into our lives. This Comforter is the promise which I give unto you of eternal life, even the glory of the celestial kingdom. ( D&C 88:3–4 .) Even though the temple is available for everyone who wants to participate, we need to know that we have to work hard to be able to get there. The temple is a sacred place. Some people may think that that’s exactly why it should be available to everybody. However, we know that we need to be worthy to enter. The temple represents the Kingdom of Heaven, and we need to show that we are willing to do our part to participate. However, I consider the main reason to be worthy is not about proving if you’re clean or not. It prepares us to receive all the blessings that we can get there. Someone who is not doing what is asked can enter the temple, but his/her journey will be meaningless. President Gordon B. Hinckley taught: “We believe in chastity before marriage and total fidelity after marriage. That sums it up. That is the way to happiness in living. That is the way to satisfaction. It brings peace to the heart and peace to the home”. Chastity is one of the hardest laws for the youth. It is undeniable that it is not necessarily easy, however, the Lord needs that from us. In Thimothy 4:12, we read: Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” The temple is a spiritual school. We learn the things that we cannot learn outside it. There is no other place on this Earth where we can do these sacred covenants. The temple is the balm that can calm down our wounds, and the place of happiness in this exhausting world. Nothing can be compared with the greatness we can be blessed with if we are willing to live a worthy life. It is not about achieving honor. It is about becoming like Him. President Gordon B. Hinckley said that the temple “becomes a school of instruction in the sweet and sacred things of God. Here we have outlined the plan of a loving Father in behalf of His sons and daughters of all generations. Here we have sketched before us the odyssey of man’s eternal journey from premortal existence through this life to the life beyond. Great fundamental and basic truths are taught with clarity and simplicity well within the understanding of all who hear”. The proclamation reminds us of the importance of the temple in our lives. It clearly states that marriage is ordained by God. “The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity.” Without the temples, we would not be able to do this sacred commandment. My advice for my friend who is about to receive the endowment is to have faith. Believe that these things are true and act upon them. God loves us, and he wants us to be happy. Elder Franklin D. Richards reminds us that “The endowment, of course, is an ordinance for the individual, whereas sealing ordinances pertain to a family relationship.” Elder Richard Scott also asked us to “Come to the temple now. It will greatly bless your life and BYU-Idaho 2 REL 200
