Discuss the following statement. What does it mean? Do you agree with it?
In the eyes of the community, computers in the classroom have come to symbolize a school
curriculum that is up-to-date and instruction that is benefiting from "the latest technology." This is,
of course, a silly leap of faith.
Technology is always growing and changing. Every year there are new technological advances
that make our devices even better. The educational classrooms have changed a lot because of
these advances. The statement given for this discussion talks about “the latest technology”. It
first starts out by saying that the community views computers in the classroom as a symbol
towards school curriculum being up-to-date and that the classrooms are benefitting from “the
latest technology”. But then, the statement goes into saying that all of that is a “silly leap of
faith”. The statement is saying at first that the community is seeing classrooms that have the
latest technology to help the students learn. Then, it basically says that classrooms should not
have the latest technology. The “silly leap of faith” statement means that the people who wrote
this do not believe that technology is helping classrooms learn.
I do not agree with the statement given for this discussion. The amount of technology in
classrooms may be excessive at times, but it benefits the students. Students are able to learn with
the help of technology. Chapin (2013) states, “Technology can assist students both to learn faster
and to enjoy learning” (p. 20). When teachers incorporate technology into their lessons, it helps
students stay focused and engaged. More times than not, students are interested when technology
is involved. Technology also gives teachers all different kinds of resources to help make their
lessons more engaging for their students. If the students are engaged, then it is easier for them to
learn. Zaza and Neiterman (2019) state, “For students, the benefits of using technology in class
include improved accessibility and increased opportunities for interactive, engaged, and instant-
feedback in learning” (p. 2). Technology provides students with more accessibility options. If
students have a difficult time reading books on their own, they can use technology to do an audio
book. If a student has a difficult time writing, they can use a computer to type instead.
Technology provides students with accessibility and helps them stay engaged and active in what
they are learning. In order to help students learn and grow, we need to do what is going to benefit
them the most.
In the
New King James Version
of the Holy Bible, 2 Peter 3:18 states, “but grow in the grace and
knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever.
Amen.” (1508/1560). Just like the Bible tells us to grow in Jesus, teachers need to help their
students grow in their learning. Without growth, no one will learn and get better at anything they
do. We grow in Jesus by reading our Bible daily and praying. Students grow in learning by using
technology because it benefits them.
