Teaching
Create an opportunity to teach this passage (
1 Kings 17:1; 18:1–46)
in a Bible-study setting of your choosing. Examples could include a church setting, a family Bible study, or discussing the passage with a friend or roommate. Use the interpretive method learned above to study the passage (Observe), derive a
principle (Interpretation), compare with other Scriptures (Correlation), and apply to everyday
living (Application). Using your submission of the template mentioned, write a report below of at least 250 words. Comment on what went well, what was challenging, and what you learned overall through this experience.
For my teaching opportunity, I chose to have my Bible discussion with a friend. I found it much easier using the above outline as a reference, as it provided me with an easy-to-follow guide for me to use. I was able to communicate my thoughts more clearly and have a more thorough discussion with my friend. As I read through the passage, she pointed out some of the same things I had gleaned from the story and a couple of aspects that I had not even considered. As we
talked, I asked what part of the story stood out to her the most. She found the portion of how the results of the sacrifices of the prophets and Elijah were so starkly different. The prophets received nothing upon theirs, yet Elijah’s was immediately all-consumed by fire. We both agreed on the fact that one of the key points of the passage is how seriously God takes idolatry. She pointed out how much faith Elijah must have had in God to even go up against the king as well as the entire nation of Israel. I referenced a few other verses in which the Bible mentions idolatry
and the consequences it has. One thing that went well was how much of a difference the above guide made in effectively conveying key points of the story. It helped me look deeper into the story and have a better understanding of the topics it covered in order to have a discussion with someone else over the passage. Something I found difficult with this assignment, however, was how to start the conversation. Overall, having this discussion helped me have a deeper understanding of the passage and view it more critically.
