Name : Evelin Acosta Instructor name : Jeff Drysdale Class : REL 200, Section C Instructions The purpose of this assignment is to deepen your learning from teaching or engaging in the material outside of class. This write-up is not meant to be a regurgitation of the material to the teacher or solely a summary of your conversation about this course. Responses must show thought, reflection, pondering and depth with college-level writing skills. 1. Provide a simple statement answering who you shared with. I shared it with my friend Heidi 2. In a brief paragraph, identify the questions or insights from your personal study that informed your thinking as you prepared for your discussion. I pondered how marriage is a protected institution in the church, and how we can become eternal families if we work hard to make this sacred covenant. In this world full of ideas, marriage has not been the focus of many people, however, as members of the church we know the importance of marriage, the blessings it brings, and the responsibilities we have to our future children. I am extremely grateful to have these truths in my life. I think that every person should know about this because the eternal family should be the primary goal for every couple. 3. In 1-2 paragraph(s), write about what you learned as a result of this conversation. What was this conversation about? What direct lines or quotes from our reading material or your research were you referencing or thinking about as you had this intentional conversation? We talked about how marriage is not even a goal for many people. We have many friends in common who have never married and are living together. My friend does not believe in marriage; however, I was able to listen to her opinion about it and love her for who she is. I must confess that it is very hard for me to see that marriage is not considered as sacred as it is for members of the church, but one thing I learned is that I need to be patient and listen to others. I expressed my own ideas about marriage and the faith I have in the eternal family. It was great to have my friend listen to it. It was like planting a seed in her. I shared the words of President Nelson “Marriage is the foundry for social order, the fountain of virtue, and the foundation for eternal exaltation. Marriage has been divinely designated as an eternal and everlasting covenant. Marriage is sanctified when it is cherished and honored in holiness. That union is not merely between husband and wife; it embraces a partnership with God.” It was great to share both of our beliefs about marriage and see how I could have made a difference in my friend's life today.
. In 1-2 paragraph(s), write about what you learned as a result of this conversation. Answer the following questions: o What deepened connections and insights did you feel because of this conversation? o What did you agree/disagree with in your discussions? How did you handle this? o Did anything discussed change your thinking? If so, what and how? o How will you build on this knowledge to strengthen your family (now and/or in the future)? o What do you feel inspired to do now that you have read the material and engaged in this conversation? Something I learned is that every person has a different opinion and that it is valid. I learned that showing love and understanding is the best way to teach someone who is new to the church and these principles. I learned that I need to be very patient when someone does not agree with these sacred principles because every person has a different background. We disagree on the importance of marriage because my friend believes that a family can be happy even without getting married. I expressed my feelings that even though a family can be happy, it would miss the great blessings of having an eternal family. I have a powerful testimony of eternal families, and I know that these things are true. I will always look to growing my faith and keeping myself worth it for the temple. I feel very inspired to have my eternal family one day, and I am very motivated to keep sharing these wonderful and sacred principles with all of those who are not familiar with them.
