The passage I chose for today’s discussion post is Genesis 14:18, “Then Melchizedek king of
Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High” (
Holy Bible, New
International Version
, 1973/2011).
What is the meaning of this passage?
When Abram returned with plunder after recapturing Lot, he paid his tithes to Melchizedek as
had Abram recognized Melchizedek as a priest of God. This is also significant in the sense that
Melchizedek sought to nourish Abram after a battle, thus putting an emphasis on caring for the
physical body.
Why did you pick this passage?
One of my favorite things to do when studying the Bible is discovering all the ways God ties
things together. I love seeing glimpses of the true meaning behind stories and especially
prophecies in regard to Jesus. Melchizedek happened to be a part of that. His name, “King of
Salem” also means King of Peace or King of Righteousness. Jesus, as well, goes by these names
in Isaiah 9:6 and Jeremiah 33:15 (
Holy Bible, New International Version
, 1973/2011). It also
foreshadowed communion between believers and Christ.
How does it apply to your daily life?
It is a reminder of Jesus caring for our needs, both physical and spiritual. Jesus will always watch
over us and continue to provide even when it is not expected. A reminder like this encourages me
to trust the Lord in all aspects of my life. Jesus does not only care about our spiritual life (though
it is very prominent), He also cares for our physical and earthly needs. Since our time on Earth
includes living in a body of flesh, we have to be able to take care of ourselves and trusting in the
Lord is the best route to go.
