Bread:
He humbled you, causing ou to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither
you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on
every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. (
Holy Bible
, 1973/2011, Deuteronomy 8:3)
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that
comes from the mouth of God.’” (
Holy Bible
, 1973/2011, Matthew 4:4)
Meaning:
Jesus spoke the words that were first written for the Israelites as they were getting ready
to enter the promised land. Jesus spoke these words in response and rebuke to the temptation of
the devil. The meaning for me is how Jesus will always provide what I need at every moment of
my life. I can trust and have faith in what He promises to do. I have the word of God as my
sword against the attacks from the devil so that I can rebuke him.
Why I picked this passage:
I picked these two passages because they are connected. It shows me that the Bible is a
living word that never changes. The promises are the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. I
have lived without running water. I have had to stand in line for a food box. I know what it is to
do without. But through all of those times, Jesus always had me covered.
Applies to my life:
And now, I am always grateful for even the smallest blessing. If I get caught up in the
vanity of the world, as I sometimes do, I just have to remind myself of what I do have and all
that God has given me. When life throws curve balls and I am not sure how I am going to make
it through, I am reminded by these scriptures that I am a child of God. Jesus will always make a
way. And when the devil tries to discourage me or tempt me to not trust in the Lord, I will
rebuke him with the living Word of God.
