Week 3: Ordinances and Covenants
Name: Luis Moreno
Scripture
●
Read: Doctrine and Covenants 84:20
. Pretend like you are explaining ordinances to a friend. How might you use this scripture to explain the importance of ordinances in the gospel of Jesus Christ?
[Write your answer here.] In Doctrine and Covenants 84:20, it talks about how ordinances are special ceremonies that help us feel God's power. When explaining this to a friend, I would say that these rituals, like baptism or taking the sacrament, are not just symbolic; they are powerful moments where we can connect with God and receive His blessings. The scripture highlights how ordinances are vital in the gospel, providing us with a tangible way to experience God's influence in our lives.
Living Prophet
Every woman and every man who makes covenants with God and keeps those covenants, and who participates worthily in priesthood ordinances, has direct access to the power of God (see Doctrine and Covenants 128:11
). Those who are endowed in the house of the Lord receive a gift of God’s priesthood
power by virtue of their covenant, along with a gift of knowledge to know how to draw upon that power...you will find yourselves better able to help create eternal families that are united, sealed in the temple of the Lord, and full of love for our Heavenly Father and for Jesus Christ.
(Russell M. Nelson, Spiritual Treasures
CR Oct 2019)
●
How does President Nelson’s teaching help us understand the relationship between covenants and ordinances?
[Write your answer here.] President Nelson teaches that when people make promises to God (covenants) and follow through on those promises through special ceremonies (ordinances), they can directly access God's power. This power helps them build strong and loving families that last forever. So, according to President Nelson, making promises to God and participating in special ceremonies are closely connected, and together, they bring spiritual power and understanding.

What did you do this week to spend time on the personal family history goal that you set and committed
to working on each week throughout this course? State your goal and report your progress.
[Write your goal here.] Doing baptism for the dead for 3 names
[Write your answer here.] I was able to do a temple trip with my ward this week and I got to do 5 names actually. It was awesome!
●
Choose a concept from this study sheet to share with family or friends this week. Spend 20 minutes teaching. What did you learn from teaching? Explain your answer.
[Write your answer here.] The Atonement, a central belief in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, refers to Jesus Christ's sacrifice to overcome sin and death. It encompasses His suffering in Gethsemane and crucifixion, offering individuals the chance to repent and find peace. Personally, I shared how the Atonement has influenced my life, emphasizing its role in forgiveness and providing a pathway to eternal life. By accepting the Atonement, we experience blessings like peace and reconciliation with God. The teaching session aimed to convey the profound impact of the Atonement on our lives, encouraging reflection and understanding among those present.
What did I learn? Teaching my fam and friends about the Atonement was pretty cool it made me think about this core belief in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a whole new way. Explaining my own take on the Atonement helped me get better at talking about deep stuff, making it easier to share these spiritual ideas. Telling stories about how the Atonement played a role in my life helped us connect on a personal level, and handling their questions made me more open to different perspectives. Getting into the nitty gritty of the lesson was a learning process for me too, making me think more about what these theological ideas really mean in everyday life. Their feedback was eye-
opening, and realizing we all share some common beliefs brought us closer. In the end, it was pretty awesome to share these spiritual thoughts and see how it mattered to all of us.
