BIBLE STUDY PROJECT: OBSERVATION TEMPLATE
Passage: Acts 9:36-43
A. I have read Acts 9:36-43 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV).
Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or
found at Biblegateway.com
o Yes
o No
B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find as long as you meet the minimum amount. 1. Similarity – In both translations they give her name as Tabitha and say that it is a translation of Dorcas. The NCV translation states that the translation is in Greek while the CSB does not give what is translated from. 2. Similarity – Both translations have Peter staying with Simon, a tanner, after bringing Tabitha back to life. Although they word it differently with the CSB not giving an exact time just saying some time and NCV giving a time frame of many days. 3. Difference – In the CSB translation they describe Tabitha as doing good works and acts of charity but in the NCV they describe the same actions of charity as good deeds and kind acts. This makes it seem like it was just for anyone instead of for the poor. 4. Difference – In the CSB they state that believers heard Peter was in Lydda near Joppa, so they sent two men to urge him to come help, in the NCV translation they state
that Peter was in Lydda before saying that Tabitha died and then told that Lydda was near Joppa, so they sent messengers. 5. Difference - In verse 39 while both say the widows shared what Tabitha made the CSB describes it as robes and clothes and the NCV describes it as shirts and coats. While they are all types of clothes, they are different types of clothes and that does make the reader see something different. C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying
1. Main characters: (List them)
Tabitha, Peter
2. Plot: (50-100 words)
Tabitha gets sick and dies leaving everyone very sad. The believers who were with her sent men to get Peter from a nearby town. The men begged Peter to come help and he agreed. Upon arriving the women who were with Tabitha before her death were
showing Peter all the clothes she made, he asked them to leave so he could be alone with her. Peter got on his knees and prayed and then told Tabitha to rise and she woke up and sat up. After that Peter got Tabitha on her feet and went to show everyone, she was alive. Everyone was so happy and the news of this spread causing others to believe in the Lord. Peter remained in the town for a long time. BIBL 104

This will help you be more detailed in your answers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” Please be detailed and specific.
1.
Who:
Luke (Author)
Theophilus (audience)
Tabitha
Peter
Mourning women
2. What:
Tabitha got sick and died and since she was such a kind women to everyone around her the believers sent for Peter. Peter agreed to come see what he could do and
came back to where she was and got on his knees and prayed. After praying Peter told Tabitha to get up and she opened her eyes, sat up then eventually got up and walked into the other room where everyone was waiting. Word of this spread around the town and more people came to believe in the Lord.
3. Where:
Joppa, a seaport city on the Mediterranean coast.
4. When:
Although the passage does not give a time of day we know that the book of Acts occurs between A.D. 60-62.
5. Why:
Tabitha made clothes to help the poor and that meant a lot of the people of Joppa so when she was sick they were so sad. Peter came to save her so that those who did not believe in the Lord would come to believe.
6. How:
Tabitha was healed and brought back to life by Peter because both believed in the Lord and that though him miracles could happen. Peter used the power of prayer to heal her.
