1 Why Is It Important to Study the Bible? Britney Henderson Colorado Christian University INT-212A - Adult Studies Seminar II Instructor Davis January 28, 2024
2 Why Is It Important to Study the Bible? Personally, I believe one of the most important reasons to study the Bible is because God took the time to provide us with all of these letters. He loves and is concerned with our well- being enough that he put forth the effort to reach us and guide us, like a strong, respectable Father would. Dr. Sprout mentions that the Bible translations we have today may or may not be without error, but that the original manuscripts were absolutely correct.(Bickel & Jantz, 2003, p. 18) That would bring me into my next reason of why it is important to study the Bible. The more translations and meditating we can do on the Word, the closer we can come to truly understanding what God was and is still trying to tell us. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness...” ( NASB, 1971, 2 Timothy 3:16) It is important to study the Bible so that we can grow into the Christians that God has called us to be. Like a loving Father, God seeks to help correct us and guide us. When you are studying something, you are actively trying to apply it to your circumstances and being actively engaged. In our text, Knowing the Bible 101, there are four distinct benefits of not just reading, but studying God’s Word. First off, by studying over simply reading, you will please God. I mean isn’t that one of the main reasons that he created us in the first place? To create connection and to have someone care and worship Him for all the greatness that He consists of? Secondly, by studying His Word, we will learn how to live and grow as Christians. I know for me personally, I didn’t just wake up one day and know without a shadow of a doubt how to go about living my life in a way that would make Him proud. It is something I had to study on and look into. It didn’t just come as second nature. In fact, sin is what comes to the surface first if I’m being
3 honest. Next, over time you will develop spiritual discernment. This one is of the utmost importance. The only way to know if others are speaking the truth, is to know the truth yourself without a doubt. This can be of such high importance in my opinion because you never know if you are going to be the closest thing someone sees that resembles the face of Jesus. This is so serious because it is potentially dealing with someone else’s eternity. When you are just idly reading versus studying, things don’t seem to be as accessible as they do when you are truly studying. When the enemy comes trying to attack you or your loved ones, you will want to be more than ready with versus memorized and context understood. (Bickel & Jantz, 2003, p. 29)
