Directed Study (Helaman 10-16) Instructions: Please write an essay (between 150-300 words) based on one of the following prompts. Your essay should cite two specific scripture references from the reading block in answering each question, and should also conclude by explaining a meaningful application for your own life of the principles taught. Option #1 Follow the Prophet • Search the following for reasons why some people struggle to follow living prophets (Helaman 10:13-15; 11:22-23; 12:1-7; 13:23-29) Because they frequently harden their hearts to the prophet's teachings, people find it difficult to follow him. Their disbelief in God's goodness and truth, which causes them to rebel and want to live their own way. The majority of the time, people's pride and greed are what keep them apart from God. The people of old paid attention to the prophets and heeded their advice regarding their transgressions. But as time went on, people began to dislike having their sins and transgressions pointed out to them. The same is true in the modern era, when people detest criticism and frequently use the church and the prophet's teachings to excuse their wrongdoing. • Why do you think people struggle to follow the prophets today? Individuals would prefer to live free from shackles that confine them than to be bound by rules that have the power to transform and enrich their lives. Individuals frequently want to follow their hearts, even when doing so is against the law or the commandment; to them, it is right. For instance, some individuals decry the church for its stance against same-sex unions, even though such unions are legal. Because it is frequently interpreted as a sign of a lack of understanding or love, this either makes people turn away from the church or its teachings. It comes down to a person's pride, convictions, and heart becoming resistant to the truth, in my opinion.
• What blessings have you seen come to those who follow the counsel of living prophets? The book of Mormon has given me the bravery to maintain that truth in the face of criticism from outsiders regarding my church membership. The blessings that I have received are the bravery to stand firm in my beliefs in the face of opposition from the outside world, the testimony of the Savior, and guidance and advice from God's appointed prophet. God's love for us was so great that He sent His Son to earth to fulfill the atonement and the resurrection for me to live. Christ, a God, loved us so much that He gave His life to atone for our sins, transgressions, and weaknesses and to clear the path so that we can have eternal life
