Session 4 Reflections Paper God is an almighty, truthful God, and he would never tell a lie. The work of the Apostle Paul, being equipped to be a servant of him and going out to spread the Gospel to unbelievers, could not be left unfinished. Titus was left behind to finish everything Paul had yet to accomplish there. Crete was known for rebellion, corruption, and disobedience, so Titus had his fair share of things to accomplish while there. While Titus was the reigning person in charge, Paul decided to leave his spiritual son behind and move forward with his journey. Paul wrote a letter informing Titus that he would continue sharing the love of the Gospel, letting people know that by living a Holy Sacrificial life, we will gain eternal life's greatest gift of all times. Titus was instructed to do specific things based on "God's grace." (Gundry) His main task was to make Elders of the Church using specific orders he was given. These Elders must be people of the faith who work to portray that to those around them. The Church faced many challenges in the early days, and they are not all gone; we still face many of them in the Christian Church today. Titus 3:1-2 shows us one of the challenges that we still face in the Christian Church today: "Put them in mind to be subject to the principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work. To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle showing all meekness unto all men.” (Titus 3 1-2 NIV) There have been challenges within the Church from the very beginning; this Is nothing new. No matter what is happening around us, we should stand strong in our faith and not engage It is common to see Christians arguing over said when ultimately topics, whether it be in person or on social media. As Christians, we often feel like we are entitled to judge others and feel like they are not being a "good Christian" based on something they did or said. This is seen in Titus 1
“Paul, a servant of God and apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” (Titus 1:1-2 NIV) Most of the issues the early churches faced, particularly those of Crete, are still common in today’s churches and individuals. Christians still need to be reminded to be temperate, kind, and virtuous. Sometimes, a believer can turn people away when their life doesn’t align with their words. Many times, Paul urged Titus to remind the people to be committed to doing what is right just as Jesus urged his disciple to “Let your [their] light shine that men may see your [their] good works and glorify God” (Matthew 5:16 NIV). Clearly, this did not just apply to Jesus’ disciples nor to the early Christians, but to all believers throughout time. The way for others to see the light is to live in a way that others can observe the difference in the way Christians behave. Gundry (2012) asserts, “The doctrinal basis for these instructions, God’s grace brings salvation and leads to godly living” and would compel and attract others to Christ. The wisdom that Paul imparts to Titus as his mentor is also lacking in the modern church. Some leaders are above being taught or directed. Titus was regarded as a good pastor because he could take as well as give instructions. Consequently, he was able to encourage others, teach and grow in faith (Titus 1:13 NIV). Modern churches and leaders would be well to heed the stern instructions found in the Book of Titus In these challenging times, we need to be the best we can be. We should live knowing that we have the gift of everlasting life with our Savior and that nothing we say or do in a certain situation with others will change anything because that is all up to God.
