NAME: _________________________ Major Religions: The Basics The who, what, where, why, when of religions: Use the resources provided to discover the basics of the major religions of the world. Specifically: When they started: how old is each religion (an approximate century is sufficient) Where they started: country or region of the world Who was the founder or other key person(s) in the early development of the religion (if unclear, just indicate as “unknown”) What is the name of the sacred or important text(s) (scripture) How many followers in the world today (approximate) What country (today) has the most followers for each religion Fill in the chart below with your findings: Buddhism Christianity Hinduism Islam Judaism Sikhism When founded Where originated Who founded Text(s) Size (# in the world - approximate) Where now (country with the most…) For most of this information use: http://www.patheos.com/Library/ (click on the name of any religion to access the “quick facts”) or For size: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_religious_populations#Adherents_in_2020 For country with the most… https://thearda.com/world-religion/national-profiles?u=23r#RELADH Click on the name of the religion in question, then look at the list under the map. To get the “country with the most” at the top, click on the name of the religion at top of the chart (not the one with %). You may have to click a second time to get the highest count at the top of the list. For a different religion, just use “add a variable” in upper left of the page to select a different religion. (Once you have the new religion showing, you can X out the one you already got counts for.) Note: for “size” we are looking for population count, not ranking, not percentage of the population (Grade for charts = 25 points. -1 point for every three blank or incorrect answers) [More on next page] Page 1 of 3
NAME: _________________________ Major Religions: The Basics Now let’s focus more on the number of followers for each religion as well as for several different Christian denominations. Use the resources provided to find out how many followers for each religion are in your state and your county. I’ve given you the counts for the world and the USA for comparison. Note: the shaded spaces do not seem to be indicated in the sources provided. If you can find reasonable information at some other source, bonus points for you (please provide the URL for the source). If some information seems unavailable you may indicate “NA” in the space in the chart. But be warned: your “NA” notation will be checked against the ARDA resource and if the information is present, your NA will be counted as a blank (=wrong, for grading purposes). Putting a zero instead of NA or leaving an NA blank will both be counted as wrong. Christian Denominations: In the world* (2020) In the USA (2020) In your state ( indicate which state): In your county ( indicate which county): Catholicism 1.345 billion 73,900,000 Baptist 100 million 24,063,151 Eastern Liturgical (Orthodox) 220 million 7,150,000 Anglican/Episcopal 110 million 1,576,611 Latter-day Saints (Mormon) 17 million 6,721,031 Lutheran 70-90 million 5,596,836 Methodist 60-80 million 9,865,009 Pentecostal 280 million 5,855,252 Presbyterian/Reformed 40 million 2,450,546 Non-Christian Religions: Judaism 14.7 million 5,578,686 Islam 1.9 billion 4,564,042 Hinduism 1.16 billion 1,602,582 Buddhism 506 million 4,300,257 Sikhism 26 million 417,063 *Counts for Christian denominations in the world from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_denominations_by_number_of_members Use https://thearda.com/us-religion/statistics/membership Hints: View the reports for your state and county (you will do this twice: once for your entire state, and then for the county in the state you live in) Be sure to take the counts from the “ adherents ” column (not the “congregations” column) Sort by “ family ” (click “family” at the top of the report) and total the counts together for related denominations (you may want to use a calculator). For instance, there may be 20 or more different kinds of “Baptist” denominations; for our purposes here, add them all up to get one total count to put on the above chart It is OK to round up or down to the nearest 1000 if that makes it easier to get an approximate total count for any given “family”.
