4MAT Book Review: Blanchard Assignment Jeffery D. Smith LEAD510: Biblical Foundations of Leadership Professor R. Gowins February 17, 2024
ABSTRACT In “Lead Like Jesus: Revisited” by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges, the writers pose an interesting evaluation on authority founded in the lessons of Jesus Christ. The book exhibits a life-changing archetype that promotes leaders to replicate the servant leadership technique demonstrated by Jesus Christ. Blanchard and Hodges establish that successful stewardship begins with a individual conversion. The authors stress the significance of persons in charge having the ability to identify their own individual faults and self-focused inclinations. The authors also focus that genuine leadership is about helping others unselfishly, just like Jesus. Blanchard and Hodges summarize four key leadership components: Heart, Head, Hands, and Habits. In the Heart component, leaders should have the right drive and principles, lining themselves up with the ideologies of Jesus. The Head component centers on pursuing intelligence and knowledge, while the Hands component emphasizes the necessity of employing management dealings successfully. The Habit component stresses the importance of firm and deliberate authority traditions. The book highlights the need for humbleness, responsibility, and compassion in leadership. It also promotes leaders to formulate a keen insight, create targets, and connect to others efficiently in order to encourage and lead their groups. They assert that leadership is an enduring process of education and development, demanding constant introspection and coming into agreement with Jesus’ guidance principles. CONCRETE RESPONSE One of the personal life experiences that the book “Lead Like Jesus: Revisited” triggered in my memory was when I had to lead a team of volunteers for a community service project. I
was assigned as the project leader by the organization that sponsored the event, and I had to coordinate with different stakeholders, such as the local authorities, the beneficiaries, and the other volunteers. I remembered that the book emphasized the importance of leading with humility, love, and service, following the example of Jesus. I tried to apply these principles in my leadership style, by listening to the needs and opinions of others, by showing appreciation and respect for their contributions, and by serving them with joy and compassion. I also tried to model the values and behaviors that I expected from them, such as integrity, accountability, and excellence. The project was a success, and I received positive feedback from the organization, the beneficiaries, and the volunteers. They appreciated my leadership and thanked me for making them feel valued and empowered. I was humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve them and to learn from them. I realized that leading like Jesus was not only effective, but also fulfilling and rewarding. REFLECTION Some of the questions that pop up for me after reading this book are How can I cultivate a humble and obedient heart that seeks God’s will above my own? How can I align my vision, values and goals with God’s purpose for my life and work? How can I develop the skills and competencies that are needed to serve others effectively and efficiently? How can I form healthy habits that sustain my spiritual, physical, mental and emotional well-being? How can I overcome the challenges and temptations that may hinder my growth as a leader? How can I inspire and

empower others to lead like Jesus in their own spheres of influence? How can I measure the impact and outcomes of my leadership on myself, others and God’s kingdom? These are some of the questions that I would like to explore further as I continue to learn from this book and apply its teachings to my own leadership journey. ACTION One of the actions that I am going to take because of reading "Lead Like Jesus: Revisited" is to cultivate a habit of daily prayer and reflection. I believe that this will help me align my heart and mind with God's will and purpose for my life, ministry, and work. I want to follow the example of Jesus, who often withdrew to a quiet place to pray and listen to the Father (Luke 5:16). By spending time with God, I hope to grow in intimacy, trust, and obedience to Him. Another action that I am going to take is to practice servant leadership in all my relationships and roles. I learned from the book that Jesus defined leadership as serving others, not lording over them (Mark 10:42-45). He demonstrated this by washing his disciples' feet, a task reserved for the lowest servant (John 13:1-17). He also taught that the greatest among us is the one who serves the most (Luke 22:26-27). I want to imitate Jesus by putting the needs and interests of others before my own, and by using my gifts and abilities to serve God and His kingdom.
