Journal Submission (Week 2) – Alejandro Gallo
✎
Authors and Redactors, Prompt #1:
Describe in your journal in 1–2 sentences
what Nephi is doing (by way of redaction) in the first 9 chapters of 1 Nephi.
The first 9 chapters narrate the trip of Lehi’s family. Nephi redacts some experiences the family had throughout the trip. He emphasizes the obedience
and the power of God’s promises. His sources are his experiences, his stories.
✎
Authors and
Redactors, Prompt #2:
Pick one of the references in the list above and write 1-2 sentences explaining in detail Nephi's redaction process in that passage.
1 Nephi 3:1–2: I believe his redaction process started with the dream, the primary source of the passage. He added context by explaining the precise moment in the story- And it came to pass that I, Nephi, returned from speaking with the Lord, to the tent of my father-, and then introduced the source: “And it came to pass that he spake unto me, saying”. He also denoted a special attention to his name in: “pass that I, Nephi”; in my opinion
he makes this pause to express the responsibility he had, furthermore, the emphasis could, at the same time, refer to a feeling of culpability for not having excel in his mission. ✎
Authors and Redactors, Prompt #3:
In addition to what these verses tell us about Mormon, what do they specifically tell us about his efforts as a redactor? (1–2 sentences)
I believe that in these verses, he tries to show that keeping this record was not his only obligation- when he says, “this book cannot contain even a hundredth part of what was done among so many people’”, or by saying “a small record of”. In the following verses he mentions the calling to keep this record, this denotes his commitment and honesty. In the last verses he expresses his testimony and showcases that his efforts are not only made for the future generations, but as a mean of gratitude for what God did for his people. ✎
Authors and Redactors, Prompt #4:
Considering Mormon is skipping so much other material, why do you think he chose to spend so much effort explaining the Nephite system of weights and measures? How does his explanation help you make more sense of what he describes in verse 20–23? Your response should be in 1–2 sentences.
I believe that the exegesis of Mormon was, by making emphasize on the weights and measure, make the reader a little more concerned about money,
more materialistic. The reader now would be more empathetic with the following story. The reader would unconsciously develop a attachment to the amount and the reading would make a twist: why tempt ye me? Knowledge and attachment for materialistic things increase temptation.
