Read Galatians and write a summary statement of the overall message of the book in your own words (1 to 3 sentences). The book of Galatians is written by Paul, he teaches that we are saved if we trust our Lord Jesus Christ and not bond by Laws. Paul says that by following Jesus make us a better person and it makes us treat each other better. Galatians shows us that faith in Jesus brings us freedom and peace with others. 2. List at least 10 historical-cultural facts related to the study of Galatians (these can be copied directly from the textbook). 1. Galatia was located in the region geographers call Anatolia (or Asia Minor)—modern-day Turkey. 2. The small historic ethnic region of Galatia was in north-central Anatolia, where Celts and Gauls had migrated some three hundred years before Christ. The Romans recognized it as its own kingdom for many years before Paul began his ministry. 3.Galatians is a polemical letter, written to rebuke and correct the Galatian believers for their deviation from the true gospel. 4. The concepts of "freedom" and "spiritual adoption" are central themes in Galatians, underscoring the believers' new identity as children of God through faith in Christ. 5. In the New Testament, Galatia refers to an imperial Roman province that reached south beyond Pisidian Antioch. 6. Rome had reorganized central Asia Minor and created an imperial region called The Province of Galatia that swept south to the Taurus Mountains and included cities like Pisidian Antioch 7. The Jerusalem Council of Acts 15 was the first theological council of the church 8. the cities of Pisidian Antioch, Lystra, and Derbe—the cities of Paul’s first tour were not in this region and instead belonged to the southern area populated by people called Phrygians. 9. The majority of the Galatian population was non-Jewish, which is why Paul's letter emphasizes the universality of the gospel message and the need to move away from Jewish ceremonial practices. 3. Learning about these historical facts and culture of Galatia helped me understand the reason why Paul wrote this letter to the Galatians. Galatia was located in current day Turkey and had Page 1 of 4
BIBL 472 many people that came from different places. Paul wrote this letter to remind the Galatians that everyone can follow our Lord Jesus Christ without those traditional Jewish laws/rules. Paul made it a point to tell the Galatians about the message of Jesus and not to get caught up in those old traditions. 4. Based on your contextual grasp of the overall message of Galatians, write a summary paragraph that explains how you can personally apply the book’s message to your own life (100 word minimum). The Book of Galatians help me realize how I been trying to live life on my own efforts and not truly trusting in Jesus Christ. I understand that trusting in Jesus Christ is vital for me to walk in the salvation that is gifted to us. Paul’s teachings helped me see that we are all set free from the burden of working for salvation by preforming religious rituals. We can freely live in the grace of God if we hold fast to what Christ has given me, It also remind me to seeks guidance from the holy spirit and not guidance from the flesh. If we seek the guidance from the Holy Spirit it can change our lives forever. I also realized how easy it can be to fall into legalistic thinking. My standing before the Father is only based off my faith in Jesus Christ and not off my merits. A strong early church tradition places the location of John’s ministry in Ephesus. According to fourth-century historian Eusebius and the theologian Irenaeus, John lived in Page 2 of 4

Ephesus may have been his base of ministry if he had jurisdiction over the seven leading churches of Asia. 3. John’s stories contribute to a theological portrait that has been deeply valued in the history of the church. In each of the major theological councils of the church when important doctrines about Jesus were being resolved, John’s gospel played an essential role. 4. John's Gospel contains a series of "I am" statements by Jesus, where He identifies Himself with divine attributes, such as "I am the bread of life" and "I am the light of the world. 5. John’s gospel ends with Peter meeting Jesus on Galilee’s north shore. This site, today called Saint Peter’s Primacy, has been venerated by Christian pilgrims at least since the fourth century. 6. John's Gospel also addresses the conflicts between Jesus and the religious authorities, reflecting the tensions of the time and the growing opposition to Jesus' teachings 7. The study of the teaching of Christ is very important for us to understand that he is the great I AM and the one only true Lord and savor. 4. BIBL 472 Applying the Book of John causes me to embrace Jesus as the center of my faith and the center of my life. It reminds me strive to take on the love that he has shows us. The book helps me understand the character and promises of Christ. As I read the conflicts he had with the authorities, it tells me that I need to stand firm in my faith against all challenges. His message of eternal life pushes me to live out his teachings and to grow closer to Him as my Lord and Savior. Page 4 of 4
