2-2 Short Paper: Raising a Teen Nicole Connelly PSY 322: Adolescent Development Professor Seth Oliver November 2nd, 2023 From what I’m told, raising a child is the most fulfilling yet stressful thing an individual
can do. Parents constantly worry about whether they are being the best parents they can be, and if they are teaching their children to be positive and productive members of society. A parent is doing this all while trying to enjoy every moment they have with their children. There are many factors that shape the development of teens and culture plays a large role in this. “Culture is learned and socially shared, affecting all aspects of an individual’s life. Social responsibilities, sexual expression, and belief-system development, for instance, are all things that are likely to vary by culture” (Libretexts, 2020). Once an adolescent begins to develop they start to create unique belief systems through their own interactions with social, familial, and cultural environments. There are similarities and differences between my own experiences to that of the teen I am “raising”. The differenaces being the advancements in technology and the use of soical media. Growing up I had influences from my paretns telling me how to be the best person I can be and teaching me right and wrong, passing on traditions. I also had peers and friends who influenced me in good ways and bad ways. Depending on a child’s upbrining and influences at home would determine what influences they go towards. The children that I raise will have all of those influences and understand the consequences of the bad influences. I will give my children the freedom to learn and find their own way with my guidence and support life my parents did for me. I was raised in Salem Massachusettes a city surrounded by ocean and a very diverse community. The cultural group that influenced me the most growing up was the diverse community that I lived in. I was able to have friends of many cultural backgrounds and learn about their unique traditions. Being in a diverse community it pushed me to think outside of the
box and try new experiences. I also was happy to show my friends different unique transitions my family had such as boating weekends and fishing. These influences have shaped my adolescence and emerging adulthood because I was open to all cultures and people at a young age. It showed me how to be kind to those in need because I grew up in a family with a parent who suffered from alcoholism. I think a lot of my influences shaped where I am today working to help those in need and be an advocate for them. References
