How does the pattern of your individual data relate to the pattern of results predicted? My independent data was somewhat different than what was predicted. I did in fact get more correct responses for actual words than nonwords but my reaction time was faster for nonwords. Although, they were very close in time frame. What does this lab tell us about reading as a bottom-up or top-down process? What do you think would happen when learning a new language? The bottom-up process refers to retrieving sensory information from the external environment to build perceptions based on the current information (Rousay, 2023). The top-down process interprets incoming information-based experiences (Rousay, 2023). When learning a new language you would learn with a bottom-up process to receive information from the environment around you. Lab Questions How does the pattern of your individual data relate to the pattern of results predicted? My individual data is the opposite of what is predicted. My response time for associated words is much slower than for unassociated words. I find it very interesting that my reaction time was less for accosted words. What does this lab suggest in the role of top-down processing when reading? What does it reveal about a “web of concepts”? In top-down processing, we can use our knowledge to predict what is going to happen next. Much like reading a chapter book you can predict what will happen in the next chapter based on how the previous one ends. This lab reveals that like the web of concepts everything is connected in some way. 3

Module Question These labs are all about recognizing elements of your language quickly and accurately. We tend to think of reading as a passive skill because it’s automatized. What do you think these labs tell us about what needs to happen for artificial intelligence (think Alexa and Siri) to recognize and process language as quickly and efficiently as we do? What do you think we are still better at doing compared to AI when it comes to language? This makes me think of working with young children with a speech impediment. I am able to understand what they are saying most of the time because I can pick up some of the English words that they are saying. While using top-down processing I can take past experiences to help me understand. References Rousay, V. (2023, September 7). Bottom-up processing: Definition and examples .
