1-3 Short Paper: Interaction of Biology and Environment Nicole Connelly PSY 322: Adolescent Development Professor Seth Oliver October 27th, 2023 There are many biological and environmental factors that are critical for a child’s
development. Two biological and environmental factors that go hand in hand are poverty and nutrition. A child’s living environment is an important aspect of development; poverty, depending on how severe, can hinder the child’s living environment. Poverty can influence a child’s health and cognitive development (all4kids, 2021). It can negatively affect how the body and mi nd develop, and economic hardship can alter the fundamental structure of the child’s brain (all4kids, 2021). This hardship is something that is faced all over the world. With poverty, comes malnutrition because families do not have the means to provide healthy food for their children. Most forms of malnutrition across all parts of the world – from rural plots to city blocks – are rooted in poverty and inequity” (UNICEF, n.d). Due to this deprivation, these children are less likely to finish school, more likely to become ill, and more likely to remain in poverty (UNICEF, n.d). Poverty and malnutrition can bring unique challenges to those who are adopted. When adoptees are brought into their new homes they can have many delays in development and physical growth. Getting the correct nutrition and vitamin intake is an important factor for child development. For proper development, the environment must be healthy and meet the needs of the child. For example, a child who grows up in a loving environment that meets all the basic needs will develop psychically and mentally better than someone who grows up in a household with abuse and malnutrition. Adoptees can experience a language delay as well as motor skills. There are many things that can be done to support an adoptee to have a great fulfilled life. Adoption is not for every parent and it takes a special person to be one. Giving these children access to the proper medical treatment and personnel will help them develop and meet their milestones. Accepting that they had a life before their adoption can bring trauma to them and provide the proper care that is needed for them during those times (Karanova, 2022). Help them
understand that they are safe and will be able to live a happy and healthy life. Providing them with basic needs such as food, water, and shelter. References
