I first want to say thank you for your thoughts on this topic. It is true that for a child having a secure attachment to their caregiver can benefit them in an abundance of ways. Not only does having this attachment advance their social and emotional skills, but it also helps to develop a larger vocabulary and allows them to easily adjust to unfamiliar places such as childcare (Martorell, 2020, p. 54). While having a secure attachment shows to be favorable for a child, there are children who unfortunately do not have this bond with their caregivers. A child who does not have a secure attachment may have hostility and behavioral problems during their school years. The textbook states that not forming a secure attachment as a child can influence an individual as an adult, causing them to suffer from cognitive vulnerabilities tied to depression (Martorell, 2020, p. 54). These negative examples display the importance of how having an attachment with one’s caregiver can have such a huge influence on the child and the individual that they become. A scripture that sticks out to me about the importance of a child’s growth is Proverbs, 22:6 which states, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” ( King James Bible, 2023, Proverbs 22:6).
