W08 Small Group Gathering: Preparation Instructions Watch the following articles and answer the corresponding questions. A Mother Accused A Mother On Trial Question 1 Do you agree with the jury’s decision that Kathleen Bush is responsible for Jennifer’s symptoms? I do believe that Kathleen Bush is responsible for Jennifer’s symptoms. Question 2 If you do agree, do you believe that she should be held guilty of child abuse? Kathleen should be held guilty and accountable for child abuse. Question 3 Why is it so difficult to detect and prove factitious disorder by proxy? It is a very difficult thing to do because the symptoms that people experience can be very real, or even look real. Question 4 What are the stakes in arriving at a false positive (accusing the innocent) or a false negative (failing to accuse the guilty)? In this case, if Kathleen were deemed innocent and given back custody of Jennifer, then it is very likely that she would continue to fake Jennifer’s illnesses and kept her sick. Question 5 What might lead a parent to intentionally make their child ill, up to and including their death? I don’t know what exactly would lead a parent to doing this, but in the article, it had said parents do this when they want attention. I don’t necessarily think this is always the case in these scenarios, but I do think one reason is that these parents want someone to rely on them. These parents are desperate for someone to want them, whether because of a failing/failed relationship, or that all of their children are old enough to take care of themselves. BYU-Idaho PSYCH 342
