1 When raising a child there are an abundance of parenting styles that parents can choose from. As a result, in each household a child may experience an authoritarian, permissive, authoritative, neglectful, or uninvolved parenting style. Depending on which parenting style is used, it will determine the type of individual the child will become throughout the years and the traits they inherit. In my childhood the type of parenting that I experienced was an authoritative parenting style. The textbook states that an authoritative parenting style is when parents encourage their child's independence and are loving and accepting but expect acceptable behavior from their child ( Martorell, 2020, p.75). While culture plays a huge role in the impact of a parenting style, I believe that the parenting style that one’s parents experienced growing up influences the type of parenting style they will use to raise their children. The parent can choose to raise their child under the same parenting style that they experienced or utilize one that is diverse from their childhood. My mom was raised in a household where the parenting style was authoritarian. Her mom was not so loving and would punish her for the smallest things. This encouraged my mom to go about raising my siblings in I in a manner that she wished she were raised, with love and respect. I am now a mother of a beautiful 3-month-old baby girl, and my fiancé and I both agree that we will raise our daughter in a household that utilizes an authoritative parenting style. This is because we want our daughter to grow up knowing that her opinion matters. This also applies to the choices that she makes. Allowing a child to make their own decisions will assist them in making the right choices when they are older. There are studies that show that authoritative parenting is linked to positive developmental outcomes in both childhood and adolescence (Lin et al, 2023). Offering love, warmth, and support to our daughter is also important to us when

2 working to form a relationship that is both caring and loving. I believe that a child learns and feels love through their parents first. This allows the child to build a trust that makes them feel safe and secure which will benefit them in their future relationships. There are many scriptures in the Bible that display the importance of raising a child. A scripture that sticks out to me that correlates with an authoritative parenting style is 3 John 1:4 which states, “I have no greater joy than to hear my children walk in truth” ( King James Bible, 2023, 3 John 1:4). This correlates since an authoritative parenting style allows a child to grow and go about their lives in a manner that is truthful to who they are. This parenting style allows a child to learn morals and distinguish what is right from wrong through talks, decision making, and much more. For a parent this may bring joy since they can have peace in knowing that their parenting style was one that benefited their child in many ways.
