Refer to Chapter 8 of Groups: Process and Practice and share how the use of role-plays among group members could affect the stages of group development. (Share an example using at least one stage of group development.) What purpose could role-play serve for individual members and for the group as a whole? Chapter 8 in the book refers to the Working Stage of group counseling, so this is where we will start regarding role-play and its effectiveness in this stage. Role-play in a therapeutic setting includes acting out or demonstrating a particular situation or event to elicit group members' responses. The example in the book refers to a client role-playing as the mother to put them in their shoes metaphorically. By playing out the part of another, one can more intimately get in touch with their empathy and understanding, or they can release their perception of what they believe the other party might be thinking and feeling. Another example is where a couple role-plays as each other to get a firm understanding of how one side hears and feels the actions of the other. Received actions and information might be different from the intent of the giver. This type of interaction is more prevalent within the working stage, as the trust and safety to act in this way are present. Working out issues through play is beneficial to the individual and the group. Doing so in front of the other members also increases their awareness of their own problems and helps provide support. This setting can assist members in understanding some ways they may be setting themselves up to be rejected, and it can come to light in a safe space (Corey, et al., 2018). Corey M.
