Refer to Chapter 8 of Groups: Process and Practice and share how the use of role-plays among group members could affect the stages of group development. (Share an example using at least one stage of group development.) What purpose could role-play serve for individual members and for the group as a whole? Role playing with group members in the transitional stage is a way to not only work through emotions or fears but is a good way to get others to open up and become trusting of their group members. “ These exercises are most effectively used to address difficult and unfamiliar topics and may be used to deal with emotionally difficult conversations or to resolve conflict” (Bob, 2016). For instance, if working with individuals who lack self-esteem and self-worth to the point that they allow people to walk over them display as a people pleasure, then I would ask them to perform some role-playing exercises about how to say no. This would help the client over come the fear of saying no, help them feel confident about saying it out loud, and could possibly lead to other underlying issues that has contributed to the anxiety they are feeling now. This would take them from the transition stage to the working stage of self-discovery. As mentioned above, having one person do role play with another person will help them to desensitize the anxiety they feel about saying no. The best part of this being done in a group with other people is that it serves as a safe place to learn how to respond. This also can contribute to other members having discoveries and bring up emotional issues they may have had no idea they felt. According to Mathews et al. (2014) “ as tool for diagnosis; understanding a patient “by watching him act out in a spontaneous manner a near vertical situation”, (2) to model ideal behavior and allow patients to practice skills in a safe environment, (3) to help patient’s achieve catharsis by reenacting painful experiences, (4) to gain insight into one’s behavior, and (5) as another channel for therapy when a patient is resistant to talking about their problems [6]. This is how one small exercise can benefit all the group members in multiple ways. References Bob. (2016, October 26). Top Tips to Effective Role Play Therapy - Sober College .
