Stephanie G. Kosinar Week 8 Assignment: The Importance of Manding Capella University PSY7709 Dr. Lisa Sabato
Dear Mrs. Davis, It is a pleasure being able to connect with you regarding Xavier. First and foremost, I want to express my appreciation for allowing us to be part of Xavier’s journey and his future accomplishments. We understand that Xavier being recently diagnosed with autism brings new obstacles, and we are fully dedicated to providing him with the best possible support and care. Regarding your request to focus on teaching Xavier shapes, colors, numbers, and the alphabet, I would love to share some of our insights on the benefits of prioritizing the skill of manding skills in his therapy sessions. Manding is a term used to describe a type of verbal behavior that is controlled by a specific motivation or desire (Cooper, 2019). Manding is essentially a request or a demand. For example, a child saying “cookie” when they want a cookie in an example of manding. With the skill of being able to request using functional communication, it can bring out remarkable benefits for children with autism. By teaching Xavier, the skill of manding, we are teaching him a powerful tool for his communication. This skill will enable him to express his needs, wants, and his emotions effectively. With the information given, let’s talk about the importance of manding skills for Xavier. With Xavier’s limited functional communication, you expressed that he has frequent tantrums, such as crying, aggression, and throwing items, this suggests that he may be experiencing frustration caused by not being able to communicate. By prioritizing manding, we are going to initially address this frustration directly and provide Xavier with a means to be able to express himself more effectively; giving him an alternative behavior to engage in besides the maladaptive behaviors that you have expressed. Teaching him this skill will not only mitigate his emotional distress, but it will also provide him with an alternative behavior and more appropriate ways to functionally communicate his needs, reducing the frequency and intensity of his maladaptive behaviors. Let’s now dive into motivation. Motivation is an important source of antecedent control of human behavior (Cooper, 2019). Motivation will play a huge role in teaching manding skills to Xavier. With that being said, we understand that every child is different, and their motivations will differ. With taking time to understand Xavier’s preferences, interests, and what he finds reinforcing, we can tailer the different motivations to increase his manding skills. This will also increase his engagement and participation in his future therapy sessions. Finding something that is reinforcing for Xavier, it will increase the behavior of his manding attempts and enhance his motivation to use functional communication to express himself. Positive reinforcement is when we deliver a stimulus to increase the contingency of a target behavior reoccur in the future (Cooper, 2019).
Continuing, it is important to understand that there is an important relationship between manding and maladaptive behaviors. As stated before, these behaviors may be occurring because of frustration not being able to communicate. This is why the importance of manding skills takes the top priority. As the manding skills improve, we will anticipate a reduction of maladaptive behaviors, as he will have that functional communication alternative. This is indeed a potential positive change in communication that can create a more concordant environment for Xavier and everyone that is involved in his care. Mrs. Davis, I and the team are fully dedicated to Xavier’s progress, and we deeply want to express our gratitude for your trust in our therapeutic approaches. By teaching Xavier this skill, he will thrive in functional communication and will take that frustration away for him. We will work efficiently with Xavier, utilizing evidence-based ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) techniques, to support his growth and development in the most careful way possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and we will support you in any way you need possible. Best regards, Stephanie G. Kosinar
