2 Navigating Intelligence Do IQ tests truly reflect my intelligence? I don’t think so . These tests do not tell you our overall cognitive prowess. What it does tell you is our ability to recognize patterns, general mental ability, also known as G. From what I understood from our unit readings, it is evident that intelligence is a multifaceted concept. Sternberg's Triarchic theory and Gardner's suggestion of eight different intelligences highlight the complexity of human cognitive abilities. They acknowledge that intelligence is more than analytical skills and is crucial in understanding the diverse ways individuals can excel. As I see it, the major problem with IQ tests is that people misunderstand what it’s trying to measure. IQ tests measure your score against others who have taken that test not how smart you are. It doesn’t show raw “ Brainpower, it tells you how good you are compared to someone else answering those questions. Possible ways to boost intelligence, I feel, are through reading and understanding what you’re reading, surrounding yourself with smarter people, consuming healthy fats and exercising, and challenging yourself. The idea that the brain can adapt and reorganize itself throughout life, as discussed in our readings, suggests that continuous learning is a potent catalyst for cognitive improvement. Engaging in intellectually stimulating activities, such as problem-solving exercises or learning new skills, aligns with this concept. Surrounding
3 yourself with intellectual people I have seen you will learn a thing or two as opposed to let’s say sitting down and watching TV all day. There’s not much you can learn from “Grey’s Anatomy” as it’s all fake. Furthermore, the correlation between physical exercise and healthy “brain food” to cognitive benefits is noteworthy. Research, including studies from reputable journals like Neurology and Brain Structure and Function, consistently supports the positive impact of regular exercise on brain health. The increased blood flow and neurogenesis associated with physical activity contribute to improved cognitive function. In terms of the best model for measuring intelligence, I am inclined towards an integrated approach. Combining elements of both Sternberg's and Gardner's theories provides a more comprehensive understanding of intelligence. Acknowledging analytical, practical, creative, and diverse intelligence allows for a nuanced evaluation that better captures the richness of human cognitive abilities. In conclusion, my perspective aligns with the notion that intelligence is a multifaceted phenomenon. To improve intelligence, I would prioritize a holistic approach that includes continuous learning, physical exercise, and engagement in diverse intellectual pursuits.
