5-2 Short Paper 1 Module Five: Attachment Styles Danielle Nance Southern New Hampshire University PSY 322 Adolescent Development Jill Tschikof November 26, 2023
5-2 Short Paper 2 The attachment styles formed in infancy influence the individual's cognitive and emotional being. There are four different types of attachment styles secure, anxious resistant, avoidance, and disorganized (Karakaş & Dağlı, 2019). The secure attachment style can be displayed in later romantic relationships by the individual being overly optimistic, constantly seeking support, and always trying to problem-solve situations (Mikulincer & Shaver, 2005). The anxious attachment style can show in later romantic relationships by the individual to overly worry (Mikulincer & Shaver, 2005). The disorganized attachment style can be shown in later romantic relationships by the individual being extreme shifts in intimacy, obsessive tendencies (whether with the other partner or hobby), unstable sense of self-worth, and value of others in their lives (Smith & South, 2020). Lastly, the avoidance or insecure attachment style can be revealed in later romantic relationships by the individual not trusting their partner, not opening emotionally, and showing strong independence (Mikulincer & Shaver, 2005). Research shows that life events in relation to family, relationships, work, and even health have the chance to change one's attachment style (Fraley et al., 2021) which can help or hinder relationships. One way to make the change is to seek a professional for attachment-related exercises (Fraley et al., 2021). Anyone can change an unhealthy attachment style, even when it hinders relationship functioning. Being socially and self-aware is key in these times. Being aware of how others react to your words and behaviors can be a great start to figuring out what it is they need from you in the form of affection and communication. Making corrections where needed. Seeking additional help, like cognitive behavioral therapy, when needed.
