3-3 Annotated Bibliography 2 Sharma, A., O’Sullivan, T., & Baird, G. (2005). Paediatric developmental assessment. Psychiatry . https://doi.org/10.1383/psyt.4.6.13.66354 Annotation: In this article, pediatric assessment processes as well as childhood milestones are discussed. The developmental assessment includes observation and interactive assessment, looking at gross motor milestones, eye-hand coordination milestones, object concepts and relationships milestones, language and communication milestones, cube model copying milestones, drawing milestones, play and social behavior, and development of attention. There is also a physical exam which includes observing motor functions, symmetry, growth, sight, malformation, and skin. The whole family's mental and emotional health, family history, the child's social and family environment, and the pre-, peri- and postnatal history of the biological mother are viewed in the developmental assessment to gain a full understanding. This article stresses the importance of developmental markers in that they aid in discovering and identifying developmental disorders that require a referral for additional assessment. This article is useful for my final paper by focusing on age-appropriate milestones. Abstract from author: While this article provides great detail about each milestone children reach and at the appropriate age, it does so just for the average child. It does not touch on any red flags, or development like neurodiverse. There is also no mention of where this assessment takes place. Studies have shown a limited set of measures is shared between countries regarding pediatric care models.
3-3 Annotated Bibliography 3 Barger, B. O., Rice, C. E., Wolf, R., & Roach, A. T. (2018). Better together: Developmental screening and monitoring best identify children who need early intervention. Disability and Health Journal, 11(3), 420–426. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dhjo.2018.01.002 Annotation: In this article, the benefits of utilizing developmental monitoring and development screening for early intervention are studied and discussed. Two groups of data were researched from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). It reported the majority of children aged 10 months to 3 years who received only developmental monitoring, only development screening, both developmental monitoring and development screening, and no developmental monitoring or development screening across survey years. Then the odds of early intervention through the clusters were compared. For both data groups, early intervention prevalence was higher for children receiving developmental monitoring and development screening. The evidence from this article supports the American Academy of Pediatrics that developmental monitoring and development screening are necessary strategies for enhancing early identification and early intervention in children. This article is useful for my final paper due to the practices for discovering anomalies. Abstract from author: This article was very vague on developmental delay and disability detection. Depending on the disability or delay could surface at different points in childhood. Sudden environmental changes could have altered results. Caregiver reports of development screening may be more accurate than the developmental monitoring questions and ones asked by the child's health care provider. Developmental monitoring can be imprecise due to limited understanding. Also, caregivers can misinterpret developmental monitoring and development screening questions.
