Cara is 12 years old and recently relocated to a new city and school because of the father's job promotion. There are some adjustment issues as Cara's family previously resided in a close-knit rural community. Cara has become increasingly withdrawn since the move, stating, “I don't fit in.” The parents presented Cara to counseling after a bullying experience resulted in Cara's refusal to attend school. Think about developmental considerations when approaching this case from a solution-focused and narrative therapy framework. How would you adapt key concepts and therapeutic techniques from each theory to accommodate Cara's context of life experiences? As Cara proceeds with counseling sessions, what would be the benefits of applying a family systemic approach? Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) key concepts is being goal-oriented and emphasizes the importance of finding the solution rather than scouting around for other issues that may be contributing factors (Corey, 2023). Working with SFBT, I would bring an emphasis on the areas where Cara tends to succeed and is an asset. In this case study, I would have Cara identify what changes she would like to see and goals she would like to achieve. For example, Cara will be able to identify what fitting in at school would look like as well as diminish her discouragement in attending school. Cara will also be able to talk about what helped her make friends at her previous school and implement those changes to the present-day. Narrative therapy’s key concepts are disengaging the client from the issues and allowing them to come to the conclusion that they are not at fault for the issues at hand (Corey, 2023). Implementing narrative therapy, Cara would be able to re-frame her statement of “I don’t fit in” to a more generalized notion that separates herself from feeling as though she is the one to blame. Cara can also practice co-authoring an alternative story placing herself of higher value than what she may be feeling in that moment. Cara will explore these stories in order for Cara to acknowledge her resiliency and she is capable of. The key concepts of the family systems therapy are how the unification of a family, and their support can be crucial to the problems at hand (Corey, 2023). In Cara’s case study, having her parents involved in the session can allow Cara to alleviate the stress she is experiencing with the transition to a new city and school. This will allow them to collectively work together to provide the support for one another and understand the need for the move. The family will also be able to identify their expectations and values that come with the new move and how to assist Cara with the adjustment.
There are many benefits to utilizing the family systemic approach. For instance, promoting a healthy and open environment can strengthen the support with Cara and her parents and allow for healthy communication to resolve current issues, as well as avoid future issues. Another benefit is, with the involvement of Cara’s parents, it can be easier to come to solutions with all family members in mind; no one will be left behind in the decision- making. Corey, G.
