of 1 2 Video Observation Task 1 Hannah Gibson-White Elementary Education, Western Governors University D094: Educational Psychology and Development of Children and Adolescence Julie Roby August 31, 2023
of 2 2 I chose to watch video #9, “Practicing Presentation & Audience Skills Through Science Presentations”, which takes place in an elementary school kindergarten class. At the very start of the video I saw the teacher applying Piaget’s theories immediately. She did this by using visual aides as the class reviewed what her expectations for them would be during the activity. This is an example of Piaget’s development theory because Piaget believed that during the Preoperational Stage, between the ages of 2-7, children will learn to use words and images to represent objects. By using the visual checklist as they review their expectations she is meeting her students where they are at developmentally, according to Piaget, and helping them to fully understand what is expected of them. Next I watched video # 40, “Assessing Sight-Singing Through Self-Assessment to Develop Independence”, which takes place in a middle school choir class. In the teachers commentary we learn that one of her students struggles with the learning barrier of having a reading disorder. The teacher addresses this by seating the struggling student next to a “strong singer who enjoys leading by example.” This accommodation allows the struggling student to get the help she needs while not drawing attention to her learning barrier. For the final video I chose to watch #1150, “Considering Changes to Immigration Policy Through Interest Group Input”. In this video we watch a bunch of seniors in high school look at their views on immigration. We see the teacher work with several groups. We see her apply Bloom’s Taxonomy by her effort to understand where their viewpoints come from. She summarizes what they tell her and uses her knowledge of the subject to compare and contrast back and forth with the students. This is a very clear example of Bloom’s Taxonomy being applied. She reviews what that already know about the subject and then works to deepen their understanding by facilitating a conversation with them. This will allow them to then continue through the steps outlined in Bloom’s Taxonomy easily and efficiently.
