Page 1 Equity Pedagogy Assessment #1 Hannah Gibson-White Elementary Education, Western Governors University D096: Fundamentals of Diverse Learners September 24, 2023
Page 2 A1. I grew up in a home where each child had a different standard for learning. Unlike my younger siblings, I was required to have nothing lower than a “B” grade through my elementary and middle school years. This was not a problem for me and took minimal effort. My parents talked about me going to college but no plan was ever made for it. My parents were involved during my elementary school years but I was mostly left alone during middle and high school to complete my classes independently. Neither of my parents attended college and when I graduate WGU, I will be the only college graduate from my family of origin. I believe that I will be an effective educator because I recognize that while grades are important doing your best and improving is truly the goal. As I work in the classroom as an aide I recognize that taking a low-level reader to a mid-level reader is just as important as keeping our high-level readers on their own growth chart. My parent’s emphasis on doing the best job that you are capable of helps me to encourage students to keep growing at their own pace instead of comparing themselves to their peers. A2. My family and social relationships are the relationships I work hard on because of how much they mean to me. My parents taught me the importance of nurturing relationships by making time for those who are important, truly listening when others talk, having respect and compassion for others, and respecting differences while also standing firm in my own beliefs. I believe that I will be an effective educator because I will model these principles to my students. I will be actively engaged both when teaching and talking with them. I will listen not only to the answers they give and the stories they tell but also pay attention to the things they don’t say and their body language. I will encourage respect and compassion through the daily implementation of SEL practices and by helping classmates to find not only their differences but their similarities as well. A3. I grew up in an area where there was not much diversity. In my graduating class of almost one thousand students, we had less than 10 students of color. I am lucky that my parents were very progressive and exposed me to lots of different cultures by attending events in the city near where we lived. Growing up, one of my best friends was half Hawaiian. This exposed me to the hatred and vitriol that many white students are unfamiliar with. I also grew up performing in the local theatre community and have spent my life loving people from the LGBTQIA community.
Page 3 Those things combined with my own experience of being an agnostic person in a very religious state will make me a better educator because I recognize and value the differences of each student in my class. I know that all of our differences make for a better and stronger learning community when we can work together to see things from more perspectives. B. Elementary Case Study A. There are many things in Ahmed’s case study that would impact his ability to learn and progress within his 3rd-grade class. In addition to a Specific Learning Disorder in reading, he also has an Auditory Processing disorder, with poor phonological awareness. Each of these diagnoses would be difficult on its own but when paired together makes reading difficult. B. Since Ahmed’s family is multilingual, with the family’s native language being Arabic, he may struggle as he continues to work on his reading and writing skills in English. We also need to take into account that even though he was adopted at a young age there may still be things from his past that impact how he interacts with others or affects his ability to pay attention C. One way I can help Ahmed as his teacher is to seat him near a sound wall display in my classroom. I have been able to see the way our sound walls have impacted our younger learners in the school I work in. Being able to see visually the way our mouth moves to make the sound has been so beneficial for the EL students I work with. With the permission of Ahmed’s parents, I would also label key items in our classroom in both Arabic and English. I would do this because we know that multilingual resources help student to feel comfortable in the classroom. The discussion identifies 1 way a teacher can utilize equity pedagogy and describes how that can positively impact learning outcomes for the student in the case study.
