A factor that I expect to influence my theoretical approach will be my professional experience along with my personal values. I have had the privilege of working with clients of all different backgrounds who are struggling with different mental health disorders, as well as, sitting in on a large amount of counseling sessions. I have first handedly witnessed different counseling approaches, which was already a great influence in beginning my grad school career. Corey (2023) states the following, “But I believe that an exploration of the past is often useful, particularly to the degree that the past continues to influence present-day emotional or behavioral difficulties” (p. 3). My personal experiences have influenced my personal values and attributes, consisting of empathy, listening skills, and self-awareness. I have truly listened to my clients without judgement, dedicated myself to assist with their struggles while maintained boundaries, and have provided client care without personal experience or trauma hindering my advocacy.
