Project Two Milestone Alyssa Hutson Southern New Hampshire University PSY 260: Statistical Applications for the Behavioral and Social Sciences Professor Herbert-Mczeal November 21, 2023
Project Two Milestone Research Question One: Are there differences in the average agreement with homosexual individuals having the right to marry one another among people who were interviewed in different geographic regions of the United States? Write a possible corresponding research hypothesis for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length. While the average attitudes towards gay marriage across all four surveyed zones were generally similar, the northeast region consistently exhibited the highest average. This could suggest greater acceptance of gay marriage in the northeast, yet it's important to consider that the varying number of people interviewed in each region may skew the overall averages. Select the appropriate inferential test for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length. The most appropriate inferential test for this particular research question is the ANOVA F test. This test is well-suited for situations where there are more than two population means, as it assesses the variance in data to determine if the means of three or more groups differ. ANOVA employs F tests to statistically evaluate the significance of these means Justify your choice of inferential test for this research question, including how the scales of measurement affect this decision. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words in length. The ANOVA tests are used to assess the statistical significance of mean differences among various regions. Our goal is to quantify the extent of statistical deviation in acceptance of homosexual marriage scores across each region. It's important to note that the data comprises nominal measurements. Research Question Two: Are there differences in the average feelings of warmth toward liberals among people who were interviewed in different geographic regions of the United States? Write a possible corresponding research hypothesis for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length. Among the four surveyed regions, the average levels of warmth towards liberals were relatively similar. The northeast region consistently registered the highest average score for warm feelings, while the west region exhibited the lowest average warmth towards liberals.
Select the appropriate inferential test for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length. Given the data involving more than two regions, the appropriate inferential test would be the ANOVA F test. This test is optimal in situations with more than two population means, as it assesses data variance to determine if the means of three or more groups differ. ANOVA utilizes F tests to statistically evaluate the significance of these means. Justify your choice of inferential test for this research question, including how the scales of measurement affect this decision. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words in length. The ANOVA tests analyze mean differences among various regions to ascertain if any of these means are statistically significant. Our objective is to assess the extent of statistical deviation in scores for acceptance of homosexual marriage across different regions. It's important to note that the data comprises nominal measurements. Research Question Three: Is there a linear relationship between feelings toward liberals and beliefs regarding homosexual persons’ right to marry one another? Write a possible corresponding research hypothesis for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length. When observing the relationship of warm feelings towards the liberals and the acceptance of gay marriage, there is no linear correlation. Select the appropriate inferential test for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length. For this analysis involving only two variables, a standard linear regression would be the most appropriate inferential test. In this context, the independent variable would be the warm feelings towards liberals, and the dependent variable would be the stance on gay marriage. Justify your choice of inferential test for this research question, including how the scales of measurement affect this decision. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words in length. The most suitable inferential test is a t-test because the research question examines the existence of a linear relationship between the belief in gay marriage rights and warm feelings towards liberals. A t-test is apt for this analysis, requiring only two variables, both of which are nominal and qualitative data.

Research Question Four: Is there a linear relationship between feelings toward conservatives and beliefs regarding homosexual persons’ right to marry one another? Write a possible corresponding research hypothesis for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length. There is undoubtedly a linear correlation between the warm feelings toward conservatives and the level of acceptance, or in this instance, disapproval of gay marriage. Select the appropriate inferential test for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length. Given the presence of only two variables, a suitable inferential test for this research question would involve a straightforward linear regression analysis. In this analysis, the independent variable would be the warm feelings toward liberals, while the dependent variable would be the stance on gay marriage. Justify your choice of inferential test for this research question, including how the scales of measurement affect this decision. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words in length. The most suitable inferential test is a t-test because the research question investigates a potential linear relationship between the belief in gay marriage rights and warm feelings towards liberals. A t-test is typically conducted with only two variables, both of which are nominal and qualitative data in this case. Research question to focus on for Project Two: Is there a linear relationship between feelings toward conservatives and beliefs regarding gay persons’ right to marry one another? Explain what personal or professional reasons you had for choosing this research question. Your response should be about 75 to 100 words in length. I was raised in a family where a significant number of members were religious conservatives, strongly opposing anyone coming out as homosexual. Despite this environment, I am someone who wholeheartedly supports the idea of people loving one another regardless of their race, gender identity, or background. Growing up in the Catholic Church, it was disheartening to hear that loving someone of the same sex was considered a sin, especially given the belief that God loves all his children. The thought of the rights to homosexual marriage being revoked due to the views of conservative individuals is deeply distressing to me.
Explain the social relevance of this topic. Include at least one scholarly source or recent review article that relates to the social relevance of the topic. Your response should be about 75 to 100 words in length. Over the years, homosexuality has remained a sensitive topic, particularly in conservative southern states. As mentioned earlier, my upbringing in the church instilled the belief that God views homosexuality as sinful. Today, even some Christians oppose homosexuality to the extent that they won't engage in conversations with someone who has come out as gay. Personally, I adhere to the principle of not judging others based on their race, sexuality, or gender identity. Despite the growing societal acceptance of sharing one's truth, the conservative South still has a considerable distance to cover in achieving complete acceptance.
