Chapter 2 Assignment (20 points) Process: First read the chapters, take your reading quiz, attend class, take notes, watch the videos, then complete this assignment. Do the assignment in 1 hour increments over at least 2 days. When you submit, be sure you log out and back in to canvas and open your file to be sure it is the one you want graded, and submit it before time elapses so it’s not late. How to use this word document : Please type your response in the specified location for each question. Use appropriate punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Save to your computer or work in google drive (recommended, auto back up). Upload and submit as a word document to Canvas by the due date/time. Please do not use pages (MAC users). * Don’t forget to make a post and reply to a post on the discussion board by the due date/time. Grading: 6 of the 10 chapter assignments will be graded this semester. This is how most real- world jobs are evaluated (random selection of projects). This means you should do a good job on each assignment, as you won’t know which assignment will count towards your final grade. Doing all assignments will help you do well on your exams. *If this assignment is ungraded, you can still earn 5 points for turning it in on time, with effort, and without plagiarizing. If this assignment is one that is graded: Your work will be graded first by your TA. For each question, you either got it all (full credit), got most but not all (half credit) or got it mostly wrong/left blank (no credit). Your TA will provide general feedback on Canvas. The graduate assistant and I will then grade 30% of all student work in order to check for reliability across graders. We evaluate reliability statistically, so there should be no issues with one group of students being graded more leniently than another group over the course of the semester. Disputes will be resolved through discussion. Once grades are released, you have two business days to email your TA and me with any concerns related to your grade. We are always happy to re-evaluate if you feel you were graded unfairly, and will explain our rationale for the grade you receive. Sometimes we will change our minds about the grade, other times we will maintain the grade. Please recognize that we do our very best, and we work very hard to grade all students fairly. We trust that you will treat us with respect when inquiring about grades. Chapter 2 Videos (12 pts): Use the videos to answer the questions. Read the associated chapters first. 1. Explain, using the examples from the videos (Kahn academy or the next video on depression), what a gene by environment interaction is. First define gene by environment interaction, then walk me through an example. a. Definition: Gene-environment interaction relies on the observation that levels of the environment affect individuals with one genetic makeup more than those with another genetic makeup. The cute baby was not predisposed to depression because it received
affection and became more sociable, which is a result of the environment. The ugly baby though grew up to be depressed and isolated because the environment the baby was in affected it different than the pretty baby. It is possible though that had the babies had the same genetic predisposition but different environments then their personalities would be different. It all depends on the interaction between the genes and the environment. b. Example from video: An example from the second video is that if you have the SS form the specific gene she is talking about AND you have early childhood trauma, then you are extremely likely to have depression. If you still have that gene but don’t have a childhood filled with traumatic events, then your likelihood to have depression is lower. 2. Explain two examples from the Ted Talk video: what can babies learn in the womb? Be sure to describe the research procedure used that allows researchers to figure out what babies know and the conclusion they draw from that research. a. Example 1: Babies can identify their mother’s voice which is learned while being in the womb. A woman’s voice reverberates throughout her body, so they baby always has a clear connection to its mother. This was researched by having to bottle nipples, one would trigger the mothers voice and the t\other would trigger a random woman’s voice. The babies would pick up on that and only suck on the nipple that triggered its mother’s voice. b. Example 2: Babies also can learn the accent of the country they are being born into. A study found that the melodic tone of a babies’ cry resembles the same of its mother. A French baby has a cry ending on a high note and a German baby has a cry ending on a low note. 3. Explain what risks there might be related to genetic testing. Why might someone get genetic testing or choose not to get genetic testing. Now, think about yourself: if you had a family history of Huntington’s disease, would you want to get tested for it? Why or why not? Be sure to tell me what Huntington’s is. a. Risks: health wise, genetic testing has very few risks. It sometimes results in a miscarriage but that is very rare. It can lead to increased anxiety about the babies’ life if the testing does not have the result the family wants it to. b. Reasons for testing: There are several reasons why you might do genetic testing. To diagnose a disease or a type of disease. To determine the cause of a disease. To determine treatment options for a disease. c. Reasons against testing: some people feel that genetic testing discriminates or invites discrimination against persons with disabilities d. Huntington’s test (yes/no, explain why, what is the disease?): Huntington's disease is a rare, inherited disease that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. I would get tested because I think it is always better to be prepared medically. I wouldn’t let a diagnosis dictate my life though. We truly have no idea how we will die so to live a life full of fear isn’t really living.
4. Identify the dependent and independent variables if there is one in one of the studies you learned about from one of the videos you watched for this assignment (e.g., the depression study, a fetal learning). What is the design (e.g., experiment, longitudinal, correlation, between- subjects, etc.)? What were the results? How can you apply the results of this study to the real world (why do we care about it, how could knowing the results help us)? a. Independent: The sound of the mother’s voice b. Dependent: how the baby will react to hearing the mother’s voice c. Design: giving the baby two bottles, sucking on one triggers the mother’s voice and sucking on the other triggers and stranger’s voice d. Results: The baby always choses to suck from the bottle that triggers the mother’s voice. e. Real-world: When a child is at a park, it may not see their mother but they can immediately identify the mother’s voice and know when they are being called. Credible Sources (8 pts) The information you will read in each chapter is not based on the author’s opinion, but rather evidence- based research. Part of the goal of this class is to help you be able to identify credible sources. Review the criteria for evaluating information using the 5 Ws: https://www.oercommons.org/authoring/19364- evaluating-information-sources-using-the-5-ws/view Pay particular attention the following guide from the website: WHAT What is the document? Is it fact or opinion? WHO Who wrote the document? What do you know about the author? WHY Why did the author write this? WHEN When was the document published? What was happening in the world? WHER E Where was the document published? What do you know about the quality of the publishing organization? HOW How did the author gather data? How did the author present information? Be a critical consumer of knowledge! In this part of the chapter assignment, you will evaluate several websites and identify whether each is a credible source. A. 5. (4 pts) First, complete the table below based on the information on each website. Fill it out with as much information as you can for each cell based on your research of the above sites. Articl e What? Who? Why? When? Where? How? A This article is an opinion piece from time magazine Time Magazine and Dr. Jared Pingleton To inform parents about how their actions may be presenting to their children. Septembe r 2014 Released on an online magazine platform and published in the hardcopy version. Time is a well- respecte d magazine but isn’t required to report facts. The author is a medical health professional and has been working/researchin g clinical psychology. He is also a minister and works with chaplains. B An article about spanking by the American Psychologica l association. the American psychologica l association and Brendan L Smith Look at the psychologica l effects of spanking and inform their audience about research and academic opinions on the topic. April, 2012 this was released on a online website the article looks at testimonies and opinions from other academics, professors and individuals who have PHD's in the field who can speak to the truth on the subject 6. (2 pts) How credible is Source A (0 = no credibility; 5 = highly credible)? Provide at last two pieces of evidence to support your answer, which should be based on how you evaluated the source using the table. a. Yes/ No b. Support: this article is presented as opinion and not fact. Although the author is trained in the field that they are writing about, they also bring in religious views which don't serve as facts. This article can be used to form your own opinion, but it would not be the
proper source to use in a research paper because not all the arguments that are made are being backed by fact or science but by opinion c. Support: publications like Time magazine do not report the facts, they report information that will adhere to the beliefs and views the majority of their viewers. At the end of the day, they are looking for monetary gain and they are not looking to serve the facts to an audience. Magazines rarely have peer review or citations which can indicate a poor argument 7. (2 pts) How credible is Source B (0 = no credibility; 5 = highly credible)? Provide at last two pieces of evidence to support your answer, which should be based on how you evaluated the source using the table. a. Yes/No b. Support: the article from the American psychology association is an organization and not a commercial website. This means they do not make very much money off of their publications, so they are solely looking to produce facts which are supported by science and the research by the author. c. Support: unlike Time magazine, this article sources other academics such as Alan Kazdin who is a Yale University psychology professor and has earned his PhD. They have credible sources within a credible source to support that the information that they are putting out is not only accurate but unbiased Discussion: Complete in the Discussion Board by the Due date/time for an additional 3 points! 1) Did post your embedded video? YES/NO: 2) Did you respond to someone else?: YES/NO: 3) Did you do both by the due date.time: YES/NO:
